Unlike most of its Swiss rivals, who are located in and around Geneva, IWC has always been based in Schaffhausen near the German border. This has undoubtedly had an influence on its utilitarian aesthetic, especially its pilot’s watches. That said, IWC now has a rich and varied catalogue, as this collection confirms.
The first-ever Ingenieur model, a relatively unremarkable round-cased watch, was released in the 1950s. But it underwent a significant makeover in the late 1970s by the celebrated designer Gerald Genta. The contemporary version takes Genta’s sport-luxe approach.
If you’re an IWC fan then you’re surely the owner—or at least potential owner—of one of its pilot’s watches. Whether you prefer a chronograph or a simple time-and-date model, these cult favourites are characterised by their lozenge-shaped hands and highly legible dials.
Now for the dressier end of the spectrum where you’ll find the incredible Portugieser collection. Encompassing a plethora of styles and complications, from perpetual calendars to moonphase displays, this is where IWC flexes its advanced watchmaking skills.
