80th anniversary of D-Day - events across the Borough
There are events right across the Borough marking the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, with many taking place on Thursday (6 June) and culminating in the lighting of a commemorative beacon:
Chandler's Ford
Fryern Pavilion, Thursday & Friday 6 & 7 June 9am-4pm, Saturday 8 June, 9am- 1pm
Chandler’s Ford Parish Council, in association with the Chandler’s Ford Archives, have put together a free exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day. It focuses on Chandler’s Ford and Hiltingbury’s role in Operation Overlord and the events leading up to D-Day, and its aftermath. After 8 June the exhibition will transfer to Chandler’s Ford Library.
Fryern Recreation ground, Thursday 6 June from 8.30pm
The lighting of a ceremonial beacon with musical accompaniment by Otterbourne Brass Band, with a reading of the official tributes. There will be no parking at Fryern Pavilion on the evening.
Fryern Pavilion, Friday 7 June, doors 7pm for 7.30pm start
Fryern Community Association will host a film night featuring a film called Letters from D-Day. Tickets from

From 10am: Charity Coffee Morning and Exhibition of WW2 Model Ships and Planes at The Royal Southern Yacht Club. £5 entry includes cake, tea and coffee.11.20am: Flypast by an RAF Battle of Britain Lancaster bomber (weather permitting).8pm: Procession: The Spitfires Marching Band will lead the Royal British Legion, local school children, scout and guide groups. Procession assembles at 7.30pm in The Square Car Park. 9.15pm: Remembrance Service led by the Bishop of Southampton and Lighting of D-Day 80 Anniversary Beacon.Netley
Cricket Field - Thursday 6 June, from 4.30pm
There's live entertainment from The Cherry Belles on the Cricket Field, Victoria Road, Netley Abbey, ending with the beacon lighting at 9.15pm. No parking on site.
Allbrook
Otterbourne Common - Thursday 6 June, 6pm-10pm
The Otterbourne Brass Band, wartime songs from the OTC, fish & chips and a tribute reading all precede the beacon lighting at 9.15pm. Car parking limited. Bring your own seating.
Fair Oak
Thursday 6 June
Commemorative events in Fair Oak include a wreath laying at the war memorial (10am), a history display at The Fountains Cafe (from 11am), lighting of the Lantern of Peace (12 noon) and a short service at 6pm.
West End
Hatch Grange - Thursday 6 June, from 8.30pm
The beacon lighting will take place at 9.15pm at Hatch Grange.
Royal Victoria Country Park Chapel, Netley
Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June, from 10.30am (in partnership with Bursledon, Hamble & Hound Dementia Action Group).
Reminiscence in the Park, including Family Fun Day on Saturday and a Heritage Event on Sunday.

There's lots going on in the beautiful surroundings of Itchen Valley Country Park this summer as the major programme of improvements nears completion.
Quilling Workshop
Thursday, 6 June, 10am-12 noon, £7
Join local artist Irene Collins for this intricate workshop in the new community building at the top of the Country Park. Paper quilling uses the art of coiling paper to create intricate designs.
It’s an easy-to-learn craft, and the session welcomes beginners and those who may know the craft. It begins with some basic techniques. Irene will guide you through the process to create a beautiful flower.

HYDC [ have been selected to perform at the Making Moves National Platform at Sadler's Wells. Making Moves is a brand new choreography and performance project, inviting school and youth groups from across England to show their moves. Eastleigh Active [ strives to offer activities for children aged 5-16 years that are a little bit different and not too pricey.
Whether they are new to exercise or looking to start a new hobby, there are activities to suit all! Some of the activities include: Aerial Hoop, CrossFit, Dance, Fishing, Football, Golf, Junior Gym, Tennis, and Swimming.
Activities will run between 29 July-23 August at various times and venues.
These taster sessions are also budget-friendly at £3.50 per booking (£1 for those in receipt of qualifying benefits) and some for FREE!
