Doorstep callers attempting to undertake storm damage repairs

image

Following the recent storms, East Sussex residents should remain vigilant of doorstep callers attempting to undertake storm damage repairs to roofs, facia boards, boundary fences etc. and removing fallen trees.

If residents think work is necessary because of storm damage, they should always check with their insurance company first.

Andy Clooney, Team Manager for East Sussex Trading Standards, said: “If someone arrives on your doorstep, or you receive an unsolicited telephone call, and you are advised your property needs repairs or maintenance of any kind, be suspicious. Tell a friend or neighbour and always get at least three written quotes from reputable businesses before proceeding with any work.”

Alternatively, residents are advised to obtain recommendations from trusted family members, relatives or friends who have actually had work undertaken, and which can be inspected by the resident.

If residents feel threatened or intimated by a cold caller, they should report it immediately to the Police by calling 999. Non-urgent issues can be reported to the Police via 101.

Financial detriment to consumers which was prevented by the actions of East Sussex Trading Standards in 2022 / 2023: £344,285.52

Avian influenza (bird flu)

Whilst bird flu is primarily a disease of birds and the risk to the general public’s health is extremely low, East Sussex residents are reminded that this is a notifiable animal disease.

If you suspect any type of avian influenza in poultry or captive birds, you must report it immediately to the DEFRA Rural Services Helpline – Tel: 03000 200 301

Found a dead wild bird?

DO NOT TOUCH OR PICK UP any dead or visibly sick birds that you find.

Found on private property?  Contact DEFRA – Tel: 03459 335577

Found on public land?  Contact your District or Borough Council

How to spot avian influenza (bird flu), what to do if you suspect it, and measures to prevent it

Trading Standards project work: Second hand electrical products

Research shows that 48% of consumers who had purchased a second-hand electrical item in the past had experienced issues with it, including around 1 in 6 saying the item did not work correctly or at all. More concerningly 1 in 8 reported issues with overheating of the product they purchased.

There are also major concerns over e-scooters and mobile phone chargers; with risks of the item exploding or catching fire.

As a result, East Sussex Trading Standards Officers recently inspected 134 businesses concerning the sale of second hand electrical products. Discussions were undertaken and procedures checked (electrical PAT safety testing) to ensure only compliant products were sold.

Relationships have been built with these businesses. So if they have any concerns or problems, they can reach out directly to East Sussex Trading Standards to ensure a swift response and resolution.

This sector will continue to be monitored to ensure product safety compliance.

The results of the project work are highlighted in the following pie chart:
