Visiting
On 06 April, legislation [
] came into force to make visiting and accompanying residents and patients a Care Quality Commission (CQC) fundamental standard [
] for care homes, hospitals and hospices. This means that relevant health and care providers must allow visitors unless there are exceptional circumstances.
This Department of Health and Social Care recorded webinar
on the subject, written by Deborah Sturdy, chief nurse for adult social care.

Skills for Care has teamed up with LikeMind Media to present a series of videos about using social media to find and keep people.
The series of 11 videos include the basics of:

* range of tools to help you boost your online presence

*Nursing careers in social care *
There’s a new careers resource for nursing in adult social care.
It has been designed by Skills for Care to demonstrate the different opportunities and routes people have taken in their nursing careers.
Each nursing story highlights the day-to-day activities of their current role, what brings them joy, how they started and developed their careers, and the qualifications they’ve completed.

Meanwhile, it’s international nurses day on *10 May*.
An online event to celebrate runs from *11:00am* to *11:45am *and Deborah Sturdy, chief nurse for adult social care, will be part of the event.
There will also be stories from people working in the sector. So whether you’re an adult nurse, mental health nurse, children's nurse, or a nursing associate working in adult social care this session is for you. #IND2024 #WeAreSocialCareNursing

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is undertaking a review [
] into the statutory duty of candour for health and social care providers.
It opened a call for evidence [
] on 16 April, which closes on *29 May*.

Health and wellbeing
Physical health checks for people with severe mental illness
NHS Sussex and Sussex Health and Care are talking about the importance of people with a severe mental illness (SMI) having an annual physical health check.
People with an SMI are at greater risk of physical ill health, and an annual physical health check can help to identify any potential issues or conditions that might require further investigation or treatment.
All adults aged 18+ who are registered on the GPs’ SMI Register and have a diagnosis of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and/or psychosis can access the health check.
People, or their families/ carers, can contact their GP surgery to book. In Sussex there are also 24 ‘access facilitators’ who support people to access their health checks.

Digital social care
Data Security Protection Toolkit
*01 May *is the date for Sussex digital in reach team’s interactive webinar on the data security protection toolkit (DSPT), staffing and roles. It will start at *1:30pm* and run until *2:30pm*. This week is part one of a four week workshop covering each section of the DSPT.
By completing your DSPT, you provide evidence that you meet all of the minimum legislative requirements of the DPA and UK-GDPR as well as some cyber security best practice.
Standards Met is the level that all care providers should be aiming for, as it demonstrates that they also meet the health and social care data security standards.

Memory and dementia assessment services
HealthWatch East Sussex wants to hear your views about your recent experiences of using the memory and dementia assessment service [
]
Diagnosing dementia accurately and early helps to ensure that people can access the treatment, support and advice they need to stay well and live independently for as long as possible.
The HealthWatch survey can be completed by the person with dementia or their carer. There are only six questions to complete around what works well, whether services meet needs, and what you’d change.

Acute respiratory infection outbreak reporting
Research has been opened by the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) (15 April), into how adult social care settings report acute respiratory infection (ARI) outbreaks.
DHSC is seeking opinions from care staff that have responsibility to report ARI outbreaks.
The research will take between 30-45 minutes for a call with the research team. Individuals will be asked you about their experience of reporting ARI outbreaks or be asked to test a service that has been developed.
The research sessions will take place until *17 May* and you can receive a voucher for your time.
