Care Quality Commission
Visiting guidance
Care Quality Commission (CQC) has now published guidance on visiting and accompanying in care homes, hospitals and hospices (04 April), following consultation.
The consultation was about the guidance around the new fundamental standard. It did not cover the scope and content of the visiting legislation itself.
There were over 550 unique responses to the consultation and CQC used the feedback to improve the guidance. For example, it added further information to help providers understand what they must do to make sure they respect the right of each person to receive visits and to be accompanied.
Adult social care
Information provisions
This is guidance for adult social care providers to comply with information provisions under Section 277A of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.
It is aimed at adult social care providers regulated by the Care Quality Commission, who must submit required information to the Department of Health and Social Care as set out in the formal notice of a mandate for all adult social care providers.
It was updated (04 April) with the latest detail on provider data advisory group members and a refreshed Annex A covering reporting window dates up to and including March 2025.
Health and wellbeing
Spring COVID-19 boosters
People who are at highest risk of severe illness are being offered the chance to top up their immunity with a spring COVID-19 booster vaccination.
The spring booster will be offered to everyone aged 75 years and over, residents in care homes for older adults and those six months and over who are immunosuppressed.
Training and development
Social care information and learning systems
One of the ways we have been supporting providers in East Sussex with learning and development is through an annual subscription to Social Care Information and Learning Systems (Scils).
This is a significant spend and during a recent budget review we took the decision not to renew after the current subscription expires at the end of May 2024. This is partly due to limited uptake of the offer.
We are also reviewing how we work with providers to make training more accessible and will be getting in touch about this soon. This will include provision of training resources which will replace the learning materials available from Scils.
If you use Scils for keeping staff training records you will receive an email from them with instructions on how to download any data you have stored with them.

Older LGBTQ+ people in residential care
The fifth meeting of the online community of practice on older LGBTQ+ people in residential care is taking place on 16 April between 2:00pm and 3:30pm
At least 1.5 million people in the UK identify as LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, +).
Research shows that older people who are LGBTQ+ experience discrimination when they use social care services. During public consultation conversations, LGBTQ+ people said that they are worried about going into residential care and care staff acknowledged there is a need for more knowledge on this topic.
Funded by the Applied Research Collaboration Kent Surrey Sussex, researchers from the University of Kent, led by Dr Jolie Keemink, aim to address some of these questions in the CIRCLE study (Creating Inclusive Residential Care for LGBTQ+ Elders).
At the 16 April meeting, Dr Mark Wilberforce from The University of York will be presenting about Curious About Care. This is a values-based recruitment method that uses real-life scenarios to help you find the best candidates for caring roles.
The meeting will consider how values-based recruitment can be used to ensure that newly recruited care workers are LGBTQ+ inclusive.

East Sussex autism action plan
We’re consulting about the development and creation of an Autism Action Plan for all ages: we’d like to gather the views of autistic residents, parents and unpaid carers, and others with an interest.
The overall aim of the Autism Action Plan is to shape and improve local services, promote the voice of the autistic community and highlight priority areas of key importance for autistic people.
Our survey asks for views on a range of services, facilities and opportunities in East Sussex for autistic people. Your answers will help us to know what is currently working well and will help identify areas for improvement, to increase wellbeing and access to services for autistic people.
The survey closes on 10 June.
