Care Quality Commission

New provider portal

On 12 March, Care Quality Commission (CQC)  made its new provider portal available to all providers for sign up. This was one day later than expected and some providers had a difficult experience trying to sign up.

Ian Trenholm, CQC chief executive officer, apologised and said CQC is working quickly to resolve the issues.

He added: “I know how important it is for registered managers and nominated individuals to be able to delegate access to others in their organisation, and this will soon be available.”

Key trends in social care

The King’s Fund has issued (13 March) the latest edition of its annual social care 360 which analyses the 12 key trends in adult social care in England.

Trends for 2022/23 showed:

  • continued contraction in eligibility to receive care with financial thresholds not having changed since 2010/11
  • cost to local authorities of purchasing care continues to increase faster than inflation
  • social care workforce vacancy rate is still at its second highest-ever level
  • fewer unpaid carers receiving direct support and fewer people receiving respite care than in 2015/16

£20 million investment

The government announced (15 March) that people in adult social care and unpaid carers will benefit from a £20 million boost to fund innovative projects across the country.

The ‘Accelerating Reform Fund’ will expand community-based care models such as Shared Lives.  This is a service that matches people aged 16 and above with approved carers.

Funding will also develop innovations and digital tools focused on identifying and supporting unpaid carers.

Workforce

Migration reforms

Government reforms restrict care workers from bringing family members to the UK are now in force. (11 March)

Care providers are required to register with the Care Quality Commission if they are sponsoring migrants.

Health and wellbeing

Personal protective equipment

Are you a care provider in East Sussex who could make use of free plastic white aprons, face shields, and/or FFP3 facemasks?

Amy Wilkinson, procurement partner (Health and Social Care), said: “We would like to once again offer to donate and deliver these items to East Sussex located providers for free.

Please be mindful that these will not be urgent deliveries and no deliveries can be made before 22 April, so you should source these items as usual if you require them imminently.”

Please email Amy at amy.wilkinson@eastssusex.gov.uk before 15 April and let her know:

  • what you would like (aprons, face shields, and/or FFP3 facemasks)
  • your desired volume of each item (minimum order per item: 3,000 for aprons, 600 for face shields, 150 for FFP3 facemasks)
  • the full delivery address
  • the name and number of the person managing the delivery

Safety through learning

One of Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) core ambitions is to ensure that the services it regulates have a strong ‘safety and learning’ culture. To ensure CQC takes the best approach to assessing providers on this topic and to make sure it gives providers the best quality information on what ‘good’ looks like, please offer your feedback via this short survey

Women’s health and wellbeing services

If you self-identify as a woman, are aged between 40 and 65 and live in East Sussex, this research study would like to hear from you about women’s health and wellbeing services.

How you take part is up to you – in a group of women, one-to-one with a researcher, or online.  There is a £25 high street voucher available for those who participate.

Run by researchers at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, the investigators would also like to interview providers who ‘signpost’ women to care or provide care.
