Care Quality Commission
New provider portal
From 11 March all providers can sign up to Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) new portal. If you have a role registered with CQC you can use your email address associated with your CQC registration to create an account on the new portal.
Registered managers currently sharing an email address should change to an unique email address and notify CQC. To update: change contact details
The new assessment framework will be used for all registration activity from 11 March. This applies to new registrations and changes to registrations for existing providers.
Until 11 March you can continue using the existing provider portal and submitting notifications via email, but on that date the existing provider portal will become read-only. That means you won't be able to use the portal to make changes or send new information.
You will still be able to access and download your saved data until the end of March.
Existing accounts on the current portal will not automatically be transferred to the new provider portal. Once you're signed up to the new portal, remember to log in to the existing portal and download your saved data before the end of March.
Workforce
DBS ‘adult first’ check
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) ‘adult first’ check is a supplementary check exclusive to the care sector.
It allows someone to be checked against the DBS adults barred list, but only in exceptional circumstances and where a person will be involved in regulated activity.
Skills for Care has produced a DBS adult first check explainer – what the check is, what it will show, what the Care Quality Commission (CQC) says about it and information on what providers can do.
The Safe and Fair recruitment guide has also been updated with important changes to information disclosed on higher-level DBS certificates.
Training and development
Updates on care sector developments
Updates on the single assessment framework and funding and training opportunities will be provided by Karen Stevens, Skills for Care locality manager for London and South East, at this webinar.
Organised by the Sussex digital in reach team, you can hear what Karen has to say on 14 March, from 11:00am until 12 midday.

Young carers
There are around 15,000 young carers living across East Sussex who help look after a family member or friend who is ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol.
'Fair futures for young carers' is the theme of this year’s young carers action day, being held on 13 March.
The theme highlights how young and young adult carers are significantly less likely to undertake higher education or enter employment than their peers without a caring responsibility.
Resources: young carers action day
In East Sussex, Care for the Carers is hosting two events:
‘Meet the young carers’ on 13 March from 10:00am to 3:00pm at Gather, The Beacon, Eastbourne, BN21 3NW. This is a chance to pop in, find out more and meet the team that works with young carers.
‘Learn, discuss, do’ on 14 March from 1.30pm to 5.30pm at The View Hotel, Grand Parade, Eastbourne BN21 4DN, for professionals, practitioners and the community.
The event includes:
- Andy McGowan, policy and practice manager at Carers Trust, speaking about the national and local picture for young carers
- group sessions with other professionals, young carers and young adult carers to think about how to work together to improve recognition and support
- making a pledge on how you can support making East Sussex ‘young carer friendly’

Health and wellbeing
Updated infection prevention control guidance
The infection prevention and control resource for adult care and the infection prevention and control: quick guide for care workers were updated on 01 March.
This update amended broken links in both documents.
Supporting older people’s care moves
Moving into or between social care services can be challenging for older people and their family or friends. The ‘Better Care Moves for Older People’ project seeks to provide evidence-based resources to guide and support these transitions.
In this blog Dr Wenjing Zhang, research fellow at the Centre for Health Studies at the University of Kent, describes the project’s findings.
A series of short videos were also produced on the subject.
Returning equipment that’s no longer needed
If you have any equipment on loan from the Integrated Community Equipment Service (ICES) that is no longer needed you can return it to our ICES provider Millbrook Healthcare.
ICES equipment is loaned on behalf of the NHS and our social care teams when people leave hospital or after illness to help them stay safe at home and retain their independence.
Collections are free and the equipment will be taken to Millbrook’s service centre to be deep cleaned, tested and refurbished if necessary, ready to be issued to others.
You can call Millbrook Healthcare on 0333 240 0599 between 8.30am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday to arrange collection.
No smoking day
It’s national no smoking day on 13 March.
The day is about promoting the benefits of quitting smoking and offering support and resources to people who want to give it up.
Beyond individual health benefits, the day emphasises the positive impacts on families, communities, and the environment.
One You East Sussex: stop smoking
NHS: quit smoking
