** We've declared an Ecological and Biodiversity Crisis
------------------------------------------------------------
The council has declared an Ecological and Biodiversity Crisis in order to highlight the biodiversity loss which has occurred over recent decades in East Herts and to re-affirm its commitment to protecting our natural environment.
Evidence shows that the natural world is under threat. Across Hertfordshire, 76 species are known to have become extinct over the last fifty years, with insects particularly affected. With a third of our food crops pollinated by insects, and much of our wildlife reliant on insects for food, it’s essential we take action now to protect our critical natural capital and drive the recovery of biodiversity.
The council will be working with residents in our rural and urban communities, businesses, farmers and landowners to protect precious species, habitats and ecosystems.
You can find out more about actions arising from this declaration as well as steps already taken to support the recovery of diversity in East Herts on our website.

** East Herts celebrates Love Parks Week 2024
------------------------------------------------------------
Much fun was had this week as East Herts Council celebrated Love Parks Week in Bishop's Stortford and Sawbridgeworth. Southern Country Park (which was recently awarded a Green Flag Award - again!) and the historic Pishiobury Park played host to many beaming families, and many friendly enthusiasts, who took part in bug hunts, face painting and nature trails, amongst other activities.
The aim of Love Parks Week is to champion the volunteers and park workers who endeavour to maintain and enhance the beautiful open spaces in our district, whilst also raising awareness for the mental and physical health benefits of spending time at your local park.

** New park cafe in Castle Park, Bishop's Stortford
------------------------------------------------------------
Bishop's Stortford's Castle Park now boasts a new park cafe which is quickly becoming a go-to destination for visitors to the park.
The café is operated by Charles and Sofia Erleigh, the couple behind Smoke BBQ Kitchen in Hockerill Street. Their ‘keep it local’ ethos means they source as much as possible from local, independent suppliers. Café customers can therefore expect to find:
* Craft beer on tap from The Belgian Brewer
* Coffee and teas from Hessian Coffee
* Deli and bakery counter goods from The Village Baker
* Crockery and catering supplies from MTPS Bar & Tableware
The Terrace Park Café & Kitchen is open daily, providing a space for residents to meet and enjoy Castle Park, whatever the weather.
