BEAM is open!

BEAM, Hertford’s new multi-purpose arts venue, has officially opened following a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring Josh Dean, the newly-elected MP for Hertford and Stortford, and the theatre’s Cinderella Youth Ensemble, who together marked the start of a new cultural era in East Hertfordshire.

The district landmark, with its new state of the art facilities, welcomed visitors for the first time over the recent bank holiday weekend. It has undergone a major redevelopment over the last three years and now features:

•    Three bespoke cinema screens allowing screenings of newly released films 
•    A main auditorium with seating for 547 
•    A second theatre space with seating for 150 
•    A new dance studio 
•    A riverside café and an additional upstairs bar for cinema goers 
•    A community room 
•    Improved access to all areas of the building, including backstage areas and dressing rooms

The first of many opportunities to try something new!

Arts in East Herts, our exciting new arts showcase which will run through September and October, kicks off on Sunday, 1 September.

The very first event will be an open studio in Bishop’s Stortford hosted by local artists, Julie Arnall and Nicky Nunn at The Garden Studio, 57 Mathams Drive, Bishop's Stortford, CM23 4EN. The free event will run from 11am to 3pm and there's no need to book. 

If printmaking doesn't sound like your thing, check out the programme to find out what else is going on. There's something on offer virtually everyday and most of the activities and events are free.

Local Nature Recovery Strategy for Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire County Council want to hear your thoughts about nature in Hertfordshire. 

Complete their local nature recovery survey to help build a picture of nature recovery issues in Hertfordshire by clicking the button below.

You can also now register your site or project to be included in the mapping for the Local Nature Recovery Strategy.

There is an interest in private and public opportunities, so please consider whether the authorities you represent have sites or projects that can be submitted through this process, no matter how big or small.

Whether you’re interested in growing wildflower meadows to support pollinators, tree planting to lock up carbon, or river restoration to improve water quality, if you want to help nature recover, register your site or project.

Fun for all the family at Castle Park in Bishop's Stortford 

Visit Castle Park in Bishop's Stortford this Sunday for a free event to mark its official opening.

This follows a major redevelopment which has been funded by National Lottery players via The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Community Fund. It's been delivered by East Herts Council in partnership with Bishop’s Stortford Town Council, with the support of Hertfordshire County Council's Countryside Management Services.

Here's the running order for a fantastic afternoon of family fun starting with a performance by Bishop's Stortford Band at 12.30pm:

  • 1.00pm  Official opening ceremony at the War Memorial  
  • 1.30pm  Professional skateboard display
  • 2.00pm Norman battle re-enactment
  • 2.40pm Bishop's Stortford Band
  • 3.00pm Trees and nature walk
  • 3.30pm Professional skateboard display
  • 3.50pm Falconry display
  • 4.15pm Trees and nature walk

In addition, there will be tennis taster sessions throughout the afternoon on the three new Lawn Tennis Association accredited courts with rackets and balls provided. Pro-skaters will be on hand throughout the afternoon to offer coaching and skateboards and protective clothing will be provided for this.

Hertford Town Council By-elections

Due to two town councillor resignations, there will be two by-elections for the Bengeo North and Castle wards for Hertford Town Council on Thursday, 19 September 2024.

If you live in these wards, you need to be registered to vote by 23:59 on Tuesday, 3 September 2024 in order to vote. If you received a poll card for the parliamentary election on 4 July 2024 then you will likely already be registered to vote.

If you can’t vote in person, you can apply for a postal vote or a proxy vote before the deadline on Wednesday, 11 September by clicking the button below. 

You will also need to provide Photo ID in order to vote at the polling station. If you do not have an accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate before the deadline on Wednesday, 11 September by clicking the button below.

Drop-in Sessions


Healthy Hub East Herts is running drop-in sessions across the district for residents to pop in for FREE help and advice about anything they would like support with. 

The next Healthy Hub sessions will take place at Ware Library on Thursday, 5 September between 10am and 12pm and at Hertford Library on the same day between 2pm and 4pm.

 
In addition, you can visit us in person in Hertford every Tuesday and Friday between 9am and 4pm.  We'll be at the Skills & Learning Centre, 67 Fore street, Hertford SG14 1AL.

Grassroots Sports Funding Webinar


If you are involved in grassroot sports and need support with accessing funding then advice is available in this forthcoming webinar on Wednesday, 18 September between 7pm and 8:30pm.

Cancel out Cancer

 
Cancel out Cancer is a local NHS volunteer-led campaign supported by the ICB, and promotes early diagnosis, and how it can save lives.

The group aims to help improve people’s awareness and understanding of cancer by talking through:
  • The screening programmes
  • How to spot signs and symptoms, and how to follow them up
  • Ways in which to help reduce the risks of some cancers.   
Free sessions are run by the volunteers, either online or face to face, and are around 60 minutes long.  

All you need to do to book up a session is email the ICB’s Communications and Engagement team at hweicbenh.engagement@nhs.net if you want to know more.
