Welcome to Network. This week, we share a lovely photo from Castle Park, highlight the excellent work being done in our schools to combat idling, share news of some great summer holiday activities and give a plug to the upcoming Stort Pride celebrations. All that, plus news from our colleagues at East Herts Healthy Hub.
** Wild flower magic in Castle Park, Bishop's Stortford
------------------------------------------------------------
Lovely to see the wild flower meadow at the bottom of the castle mound in Castle Park, Bishop's Stortford, looking so glorious in the sun.
** Children help reduce idling at pick-up time
------------------------------------------------------------
Anti-idling banners have been installed on the railings of the East Herts schools which have taken part in our Breathe Clean initiative. The posters explain why it's bad news to keep your engine running when at a stop. Pictured here are children from St Michael's Primary School in Bishop's Stortford with their banner, complete with posters they created at an anti-idling workshop.
Keeping your engine running isn't just bad for the people standing nearby. According to King's College, London, air pollution can be up to 15 times higher inside the car than outside. Children, older people and those with health conditions are all susceptible to poor air quality and younger children are particularly affected.
Spreading the anti-idling message is just one part of the council's broader air quality campaign which includes air quality monitors in air pollution hot spots and working with businesses to develop sustainable travel plans.
** Free summer holiday sports in Bishop's Stortford
------------------------------------------------------------
The former Charringtons car park in Bishop's Stortford will be the venue for a free and inclusive sports programme for kids this summer. It will kick off on Thursday, 1 August with three days of dodgeball. The sports bonanza will take place over three weeks with multiple sessions on each day that the scheme is running.
