Welcome to Network. This week, we share the date for the next Gilston Area Community Forum, highlight alternative ways of voting in the upcoming PCC election, provide an update on activities taking place in Bishop's Stortford town centre, and flag up recent changes to the High Income Child Benefit Charge. All that, plus news from our colleagues at East Herts Healthy Hub.

Gilston Area Community Forum

Another session of the Gilston Community Forum will take place on Wednesday, 17 April at the Manor of Groves Hotel, High Wych, Sawbridgeworth CM21 0JU from 6.30-8.30pm.

The Forum has been created to bring together residents, local councillors, planners, developers and other interested parties to discuss and share information about development within the Gilston area. You can find out more about its objectives, read the planned agenda and find information about future sessions on our website.

Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner election: alternative ways of voting

This important local election takes place on Thursday, 2 May. If you have registered to vote but know that you won't be able to do so in person on the day, you have two options - either apply for a postal vote or apply for a proxy vote so that someone else can vote on your behalf.

The deadline for applying for a postal vote is Wednesday, 17 April while the deadline for a proxy vote is Wednesday, 24 April.

Pony rides in the heart of Bishop's Stortford

Little Hadham-based Silver Leys Polo Club will be offering pony rides on three upcoming Saturdays in April on the site of the former Charringtons car park, adjacent to Waitrose. A great opportunity to do some Saturday shopping and give the kids a treat too!  

Rides will cost £3 and will be available from 10am to 4pm on the following Saturdays: 13, 20 and 27 April. Slots can be pre-booked or you can sign-up on the day. Riders will be treated to an equine spin around the car park then have a chance to meet and pet the club's favourite pony, 'Jessie J'. 

All profits will go to Silver Leys Polo Club's official charity, Caudwell Youth, which provides person-centred mentoring support to young people at risk.

Changes to the High Income Child Benefit Charge

The threshold at which people start paying High Income Child Benefit Charge has now increased to £60,000. This means that if you have previously opted out of Child Benefit payments, you may want to apply to receive payments again.

Child Benefit rates have increased this month to the following:

  • Eldest or only child: £25.60 per week (£1,331.20 annually)
  • Additional children: £16.95 per week (£881.40 annually) 


You can claim Child Benefit from the day after your child's birth is registered. Claims can be backdated by up to three months.

Crazy golf fundraising success

A big thank you to everyone who had a go on our crazy golf course in Bishop's Stortford last week. Over 700 golfers joined us on the former Charringtons car park and helped raise £1,060 for Isabel Hospice!  Look out for future events at this location, including the pony rides featured above.

Drop-in Sessions

Healthy Hub East Herts is running drop-in sessions across the district for residents to pop in for FREE help and advice about anything they would like support with. 

The next two Healthy Hub sessions will take place as follows:
  • Ware Library on Tuesday, 16 April from 2pm to 4pm 
  • Bishop's Stortford Library on Thursday, 18 April from 12pm to 2pm 
In addition, you can visit us in person in Hertford every Tuesday and Friday between 9am and 4pm.  We'll be at the Skills & Learning Centre, 67 Fore street, Hertford SG14 1AL.

Dementia care workshop

Find out about the Namaste Care approach to dementia care at a free online workshop. This will take place on Tuesday, 30 April from 2pm to 4pm via Zoom. The session will focus on how to integrate compassionate care with meaningful, sensory, tailored activities to improve the quality of life for people in the later stages of dementia.

The Healthier Together website is an online resource which provides information to parents and carers who have concerns about the health and wellbeing of their children. It contains advice from local healthcare providers as well as information about common illnesses, ailments and injuries.
