D-Day commemoration today in Bishop's Stortford

It's good to see the new planting around Bishop's Stortford's war memorial looking so pristine in advance of this evening's commemoration of D-Day. This will mark the day when, 80 years ago, Allied Forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever seen, changing the direction of the Second World War.

The event gets underway at 6.30pm when bell ringers from St Michael's Church join the nation's Ringing for Peace. There will then be free live music on Sworders Field, courtesy of vintage singing trio, The Rockabellas and Bishop's Stortford Town Band. Refreshments will include fish and chips, cake and ice cream and a bar from PEACH.

At 9pm, following poetry readings by local school children, the formal part of the event will begin in the Memorial Garden, led by the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion. This will comprise an Act of Remembrance followed by The International Tribute, beacon lighting and the laying of wreaths.

Himalayan balsam is taking over!

The flowers might look pretty but Himalayan balsam is in fact a highly invasive, non-native weed. It was introduced to the UK as a garden plant in 1839 but quickly spread into the countryside. It's typically found growing along moving water courses such as canals and riverbanks. With so many waterways n East Herts, there's a lot of it around.

Himalayan balsam is extremely vigorous and spreads quickly, out-competing our native plants. It produces an abundance of seed pods which explode, dispersing up to 800 seeds per plant. Eradicating it is a major challenge so a big thumbs up to the teams of volunteers in our parks and open spaces who help out with this.

Friends of Castle Park, Bishop's Stortford are working hard to remove Himalayan balsam from the banks of the River Stort where it flows through the town's Castle Park. Get in touch with them by email if you would like to get your wellies on and help out from 10am to midday on one of the following dates: Friday 14 June, Tuesday 25 June and Tuesday 23 July.

Campaign to raise awareness of cuckooing

Officers from East Herts Council recently joined representatives from Crimestoppers and Herts police to raise awareness of cuckooing.

This is when criminals take over the home of a vulnerable person and use it as a base for drug dealing and other forms of exploitation.  Cuckooing is often associated with other serious crimes such as sexual exploitation, violence, money laundering and human trafficking.
