Plastic recycling in East Hampshire is a subject often raised by residents.
The best thing you can do with plastics is to avoid buying them. Even plastics that can be recycled once degrade over time, making them less and less recyclable.
In contrast, aluminium cans and glass bottles can be melted down and recycled over and over again.
We can only take bottle-shaped plastics for recycling.
That’s because the sorting machine at Hampshire County Council’s materials recovery facility (MRF) accepts things that are bottle shaped and rejects anything that isn’t.
A large proportion of the contamination [
] (things that can’t be recycled) in our recycling bins comes from plastics which well-meaning residents have put in their black bin.
We’re hoping that the range of plastics we can collect will improve in future, but until the MRF is able to take more, the message is simple:
Bottle-shaped plastics only!
