Grow Up! update
Grow Up! is starting to bear fruit!
Orchards and fruit trees among new planting backed by Grow Up! grants
Orchards of fruit trees, tranquil spaces and the chance to commune with nature are part of the benefits being brought to the district through our ambitious Grow Up! programme.
Grow Up! is our district-wide programme designed to develop our local economy, strengthen ties with our rural heritage and foster pride in our communities.
And this spring we have been funding community-led projects in growing, planting and education across East Hampshire.

In the last few months five projects have led to orchards being planted in Greatham, Grayshott and Oakhanger, hedges being laid in Clanfield and more trees planted in Whitehill & Bordon.
Cllr Richard Millard said: “Grow Up! is our way of reminding people about the fantastic opportunities we have as residents of East Hampshire.
“The Grow Up! programme will support our rural economy, reconnect people with countryside, provide new skills, new careers and new opportunities for our residents.
“Part of that ambition is to nurture our connection with the natural environment – and that’s why we have been busy supporting tree planting, hedge-laying and the creation of orchards around the district.”
Planting made possible by Grow Up!
*Hedge planting at Clanfield allotments*
Clanfield hedges - grow Up!
Hedges have been laid around Clanfield allotments by volunteers and allotment holders including hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, hazel and other fruit trees. Thanks to Clanfield Parish Council and the allotment association, the hedges will provide natural protection from the wind, create habitats and food sources for wildlife, as well as a source of fruit for the community.
*Tree planting in Whitehill & Bordon *
WBCT tree planting
Run by the Whitehill & Bordon Community Trust this project offered residents and schools in our community the opportunity to grow locally-supplied fruit trees in their own gardens. Trees improve air quality and reduce carbon and the planting project educated people about healthy eating and engendered a sense of community and pride – exactly what the Grow Up! scheme is all about!
*Community Orchard - Lindford*
This scheme saw the local tree warden work with pre-school children to enhance an existing orchard and replace trees lost to the hot dry summer of the previous year. Run by Lindford Parish Council, the planting demonstrated the joys of planting and caring for trees, it has created a charming and tranquil space and the resultant fruit can be eaten by residents.
*Community Orchard - Grayshott*
Grayshott Orchard
This orchard is considered a ‘wellness area’ - a beautiful, restful and safe location for the community to gather. The scheme saw educational opportunities for children and elderly and is fully accessible for wheelchair users.
Grow Up! provided two leaf mould bins, a display board and 10 trees to add to 25 already planted.
*Community Orchard - Greatham*
Greatham Orchard
The Grow Up! scheme helped extend this recently-developed community orchard in Church Field with new fruit trees, along with stakes, ties, mesh guards and a water carrier to keep them watered in the hot summer months. Run by the St John’s Church Trust, the planting was all carried out by volunteers and residents, including young children who learnt about the process of growing food.
