Extra funding for road maintenance
With extra government funding, and our additional funding, we are set to bolster our proactive measures to look after our roads this year, with more pothole repairs, resurfacing and preventative treatments to manage road condition and maintain highway safety.

This includes an extra £2.068 million each for the years 2023/24 and 2024/25 from the Department for Transport Network North fund, from reallocated HS2 funding, and an additional £6.03 million from our own budget for preventative maintenance.

Surfacing works around the Dorset Council area are taking place over the next three months to extend the life of urban residential roads

Kiely Bros are carrying out the work, completing work for 2023, which is due to finish by mid-March, weather-permitting. They will then commence the 2024 programme, which is due to complete by mid April.

Affected households are provided with a leaflet before the works start.

The treatment, known as microasphalt surfacing, extends the life of the road. It is a cost-effective method for worn, but not structurally failing, roads. It also adds reinforcement to the existing surface, removing minor imperfections and sealing the road to prevent water getting through.

Big Walk and Wheel, 11-22 March 2024
The Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel, the UK’s largest inter-school active travel challenge, is back next week for its 15th year.

Throughout the week, schools across the UK will compete to see who can get the highest percentage of their pupils walking, wheeling or cycling to school.

If the school run is part of your day, you can get involved by leaving the car at home and swapping for a more active mode of travel for the week.

Dorset’s Bike It Plus project gets more children cycling to school

Bike It Plus, which is funded by us and run by the charity Sustrans, has been working with schools across Dorset to help encourage more young people to walk, cycle or wheel to school.

In the past year, the project has supported over 36 schools to deliver fun and engaging activities that boost the skill levels of young people in walking, wheeling or cycling. Giving children and their parents the confidence and ability to travel to and from school actively.

Activities have included learn to ride, cycle confidence and scooter skills sessions, as well as bike maintenance and repair workshops. Bike It Plus officers have also run community events, interactive school assemblies, competitions, and breakfasts to help tackle some of the barriers and challenges to active travel.

Find more information on cycling and walking to school, including how to access training courses, advice and bike buying guides.

Fairfield Road, Dorchester

Further to our last update, electrical connections to the street lighting columns are now complete, so our resurfacing works will take place week commencing 11 March.

This means by the end of Friday 15 March, we will be able to open the new footway for pedestrians and reopen Fairfield Road to vehicles.

Thank you for your patience.
