Bestselling author online event 14 March

Lesley Pearse is one of the world’s leading storytellers with numerous bestsellers to her name and fans who span the globe. A Lesley Pearse book is sold every 4 minutes in the UK and with sales of over 10 million copies, she has dominated the bestseller charts for the last 30 years. Dorset Home Library Service makes a difference

This free service can deliver books and talking books to those unable to get to their local library due to health or mobility issues. Books are chosen by Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) volunteers based on individual preferences and can be provided in different formats. Recipients of the service enjoy a regular delivery of books, being part of the library, and the conversations and visits of their volunteer. If you would like to find out more about receiving the service please phone the RVS office on 01305 236666 or e-mail dorsethomelibraryservice@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk.

World Book Day 7 March


World Book Day celebrates reading for pleasure for children, and is celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide. It’s never too early to encourage a love of reading and there are lots of fantastic activities and advice to help families enjoy sharing stories together, not just on World Book Day, but every day of the year. Children receive a £1 book token from school, which they can exchange for a specially published World Book Day book. it's the perfect time to visit your local library, sign up for a free membership card and find out about all the fun activities and events.

Shaftesbury Book Festival 15 - 17 March

 

The 2024 Shaftesbury book festival theme, “Reading the Land,” invites you to explore the best of nature writing. This captivating festival celebrates the best of nature writing, connecting with nature, and the winners of the 2023 James Cropper Wainwright Prize for nature and conservation writing. From farming to wildflowers, beats to birds, and understanding natural ecosystems, the festival promises an inspiring weekend filled with engaging author talks and delightful children’s events. Spring activities planning underway


It might only be the beginning of March, but already our libraries are starting to plan some extra special spring activities for the Easter holidays. Do keep checking our web pages as more events are being added all the time. Here are a few highlights so far:

Audiences loved The Midnight Mission


Three libraries at Weymouth, Swanage and Wimborne were transformed into theatres for the Brave Bold Drama Theatre Company to showcase their interactive family show The Midnight Mission. Audiences worked against the clock to solve the mystery, chase leads and spot clues in this highly interactive spooky adventure. 
Audience feedback "I loved it because we solved mysteries and it was unexpected." "Great acting, funny and mysterious.”

Celebrating classic female authors


To celebrate Women's History Month, we look back at some of the trailblazers from history who were excluded from the literary circuit and wrote under a male pseudonym in order to be published.
"We did not like to declare ourselves women, because we had a vague impression that authoresses are liable to be looked on with prejudice," wrote Charlotte Brontë, now considered to have written one of the best novels of her era, Jane Eyre.
