** Safe disposal of flammable items
------------------------------------------------------------
With the summer season fast approaching, we thought some guidance on the safe disposal of certain flammable items would be useful.
* Most gas canisters can be returned to their point of purchase free of charge, or via an associated local dealer. They can also be taken to your local Household Recycling Centre (HRC) but there will be a charge (except for small camping stove bottles, and soda stream bottles). Please note we do not accept brewery, diving, welding, or medical cylinders
* The use of disposable BBQs is not something we would encourage, and many shops no longer sell them, particularly in hot weather. Place the BBQ on a flat surface (e.g. bricks or paving slabs); ensure it's located well away from houses, sheds and fences and follow the manufacturer's instructions about lighting it. Always bear in mind BBQs can remain capable of starting a fire for many hours after they appear to be out. Therefore, they need to be left for a couple of days or immersed in water until they are completely extinguished and cool before disposal.
* Household batteries should never be put in any bin as they can cause fires, both in collection vehicles and the facilities where your waste is taken to. When disposing of any battery-operated device, please take the battery out first. If it cannot be removed, please take the device to an HRC. Batteries can be recycled at many local shops and at HRCs. They can also be put in a small bag and placed on top of your recycling bin on collection day.

** Recycle in the summer
------------------------------------------------------------
Summer brings the promise of parties, picnics, music events and BBQs…so much to look forward to! Please remember to recycle as much as possible afterwards:
* Glass bottles and jars go in your green box. Please rinse out first. Metal lids can be left on. Please don’t overfill your box, as they can get very heavy for the crews to lift and empty. You could keep some extra bottles aside for the next collection, or put them out in a sturdy box of your own (no bags). Alternatively, it's easy to get an extra glass box free of charge
* Cans, cardboard, paper and plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays go in your recycling bin. Please rinse out first. Lids can be left on
* Foil, Pringles tubes (no lids) and cartons can be taken to a local recycling centre. Check here
for details of your nearest recycling centres.
* Plastic bags and plastic wrapping (e.g. salad bags) can be recycled at most large supermarkets now

** Using your food waste bin in the warmer months
------------------------------------------------------------
Using the food waste service when the weather is hot can be challenging, both for residents and the crews! Please try and line your caddy either with a compostable liner or newspaper wherever possible as this makes a huge difference for the crews.
Provided your lid is kept closed, flies should not be able to get into your food containers, which should mean they won't lay eggs and maggots won't appear.
Wet pet food left out for long periods can attracts flies. Only put out what your pet will eat, and pop what’s left in your food caddy soon after they’ve finished.
Adding a few layers of kitchen roll can help to soak up any food waste items that creates smells.
Your caddy can be easily cleaned by putting it in your dishwasher or by swilling it out with mild detergent, or Bicarbonate of Soda.

** Council offer on reusable wipes
------------------------------------------------------------
Some parents were recently given reusable Cheeky Wipes to take home and try. Here’s a mum putting their new wipe into action!
Reusable wipes can be used for hands, faces and bottoms. One cloth wipe is usually enough to remove mess compared to a few disposable wipes that tend to spread the mess around! There are no chemicals, no waste and you can save a lot of money by switching because reusables last for years.
Dorset Council residents can save even more money by using our 15% discount code with some reusable nappy retailers that also sell wipes (no need to apply, just pop the code in at checkout).

** Recycle your old fridges and freezers
------------------------------------------------------------
Your Household Recycling Centre (HRC) is a great place to dispose of broken fridges and freezers, free of charge. Just remember to:
* clear out any items from inside the appliance
* recycle any food items with your kerbside collection (remove from packaging first)
* or recycle the food in the HRC food waste collection bins.
