"Providing Supported Lodgings has been a great choice for my family"

Kirsty, age 43, has been a Supported Lodgings provider for three years.

Thomas* came to live with her and her family after arriving in the country at age 16 as an unaccompanied child.

Kirsty was a single parent who worked, and opening her home to a teenager worked well with her lifestyle, as she could provide the level of care needed for an older child who is more independent.

Speaking up for children and young people

Children and young people have a legal right to be heard, and to be involved in decisions made about them and their lives. If they don’t feel able to speak up for themselves, an advocate can support them to share their views and ensure their rights are respected.

We commission NYAS (National Youth Advocacy Service) to provide independent advocacy for children and young people. NYAS also provide our Independent Visitor service for children in care.

Advocacy from NYAS is offered to children receiving social care services, so:

  • children in care
  • children in need (including SEND)
  • care leavers

Children and young people can refer themselves or we can refer them by completing NYAS’s online referral form.

We will be offering training modules around Advocacy in the near future - watch this space!

Handmade blankets to brighten winter days

Children and young people in the Gemini Mockingbird constellation recently received bright, washable quilts and blankets to brighten up their bedrooms. The quilts have been lovingly made by volunteer knitters and quilters in Dorset as part of Project Linus.

The quilts have been a huge hit, with many taking pride of place on the young people's beds. A huge thank you to everyone involved.
