** Carers Week - Dorset carer initiatives feature in this year's national Carers Challenge
------------------------------------------------------------
Nine initiatives designed to support unpaid carers in Dorset have been recognised in this year's Adult Social Services Carers Challenge - more than any other county across England.
The Carers Challenge is a storehouse of great practice and ideas from social care teams and other organisations and details how they are improving support for carers so they can balance their caregiving with other commitments in their lives.
There are more than 5 million unpaid carers in England and without their support many older and disabled people could not maintain their wellbeing and do the right things that matter to them.

------------------------------------------------------------
A free training programme has been re-launched to recruit an army of special advisors who can help Dorset’s digitally excluded residents get online.
Open to any organisation in Dorset which works directly with residents, the ‘Embedded Digital Champion’ programme trains people who can champion online services to their users and customers.
The Dorset Council-run course has already trained 1,200 of the county’s frontline workers and it has now been relaunched as a partnership with Barclays Digital Wings.

Refugee Week 17 - 23 June 2024: Our Home
** Refugee Week 2024: Our Home
------------------------------------------------------------
Next week is International Refugee Week, (17 to 23 June)
, a worldwide celebration of the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.
This year marks the event’s 26th anniversary with the theme of ‘Our Home’.
The week encourages understanding around some of the reasons people have had to leave their home countries and the challenges they may face when seeking safety.
There are about 1,500 refugees living in Dorset.
The majority are from Ukraine, but we also have refugees who have come from Afghanistan, including those who served alongside our armed forces, Syria and other war-torn countries who have fled due to persecution in their own countries. The majority have resettled in Dorset as part of the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS)
, which offers a safe and legal route to vulnerable refugees in need of protection.
Thankfully, there are many local groups supporting refugees in towns and villages across Dorset.

** Be a BYO hero this summer
------------------------------------------------------------
Did you know that you can bring your own (BYO) reusable bottles and cups to all the cafes at our country parks?
We can all do our bit to reduce single-use plastic waste and protect the natural environment, and remembering to bring your reusables when you’re out and about is just one small way you can make a change for the better. Our on-site cafes offer free tap water refills, and you’ll also get a discount on hot drinks when you bring your own cup.
So next time you head for a wander around beautiful Durlston, Avon Heath, Moors Valley, or Thorncombe Woods…remember to #BYO cup and bottle!

** Support to live safely and independently at home
------------------------------------------------------------
There are many reasons why someone may need support to stay active, safe and independent in their own home.
We know some common reasons include getting older, a recent hospital visit, having a disability or because they are caring for someone.
We would like to provide the right advice at the right time to support our residents to remain living independently in their own homes for as long as they possibly can.
The Greenwood Independent Living Centre (ILC), located on Maiden Castle Road, Dorchester is a place you can visit to gain some advice and support to maintain living independently at home.

** Calling all Beachgoers: How do you spend your time at the beach?
------------------------------------------------------------
This Summer, Litter Free Dorset and Dorset Coast Forum have launched a new survey to discover how and where you spend your beach days. They want to know all about your top beach spots, favourite water activities, and thoughts on litter and water cleanliness.
Dorset’s coastline is home to some of the UK’s most precious landscapes and it’s important to protect these beautiful beaches for everyone to enjoy. Your input will help to inform future projects on the Dorset coastline, addressing issues such as beach access, facilities, and water quality monitoring.
So, dive in and help make our beaches in Dorset even better!
