Trial reduction of parking charges in some Dorset Council car parks

A trial reduction of charges in three of our car parks is to take place this summer and early autumn.

The car parks are located in coastal towns: Swannery in Weymouth, West Bay Road in West Bay, and Charmouth Road in Lyme Regis.

From 1 July until 31 October 2024, the tariffs in these car parks will reduce from the current peak rates (summer) to the off-peak (winter) rate.

New way of support for Dorset families

From today families across Dorset will lead on plans that see them getting support, where needed, from those in their communities as well as specialist practitioners.

We were selected last year by the government to be one of only three pathfinder organisations to design major reforms to children's services, from family help to the edge of care, and to make sure these changes work well for families.

A key milestone has been reached where the design work has been done to change the way that social care is delivered for families in Dorset and work has started today to implement the new way of working.

Refugee Week: Mustafa and Fayeza’s Story

This week is International Refugee Week, and throughout the week, we are putting the spotlight on some of the refugees that have settled in Dorset.

Today we hear from Fayeza and Mustafa from Afghanistan.

They and their two young children became refugees when the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in 2021.

Both were well qualified with university degrees and held down good jobs.

Fayeza used to work at the refugee centre helping those who had had to flee their homes, and Mustafa was a teacher before working as a data analyst with the group WAW (Women for Afghan Women). He was also working for the BBC as a translator, translating the daily radio and TV broadcasts.

Supported employment provider Pluss have transformed the life of a young woman, enabling her to pursue her dream of working with the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Pluss have helped Heather get ready for the workplace as she wasn't sure what she wanted to do. Having previously worked as a volunteer in a cafe in Poole, she was keen to try something different, such as working in a shop and undertaking training in retail and customer service.
