Dorset children get active in national competition

School children in Dorset made an incredible 18,268 journeys to school by foot, scooter, bicycle or wheelchair in this year’s Big Walk and Wheel challenge.

The Big Walk and Wheel is the UK’s largest walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling to school challenge.  It inspires pupils to make active journeys to school, improve air quality in their neighbourhood, and better understand the positive impact these changes can have on their environment.

Delivered by the active travel charity Sustrans, the challenge is open to all primary and secondary schools.  And over a fortnight, participating schools compete to see which can achieve the highest number of pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting or cycling to school.

Rural Housing Week: Affordable Homes essential for prosperity of rural communities

More than 500 affordable homes have been built for Dorset residents in the last financial year as we continue to respond to the significant and growing need for affordable housing.

In the year to March 2024, 508 new affordable homes were provided by locally active Housing Associations, otherwise known as Registered Providers.

The developments include rented and shared ownership homes and houses for essential local workers. These sites were built either by Housing Associations or acquired by the council in the year to March 2024.

Help and support is available for alcohol problems

This week is Alcohol Awareness Week and this year’s theme is ‘understanding alcohol harm’. Having too much alcohol can harm us in many ways. It can harm your health, relationships and even finances.

Free and confidential support and advice is available from REACH for Dorset Council residents. Call 0800 043 4656 or visit humankindcharity.org.uk/reach.

Ceremony to mark NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day

We are marking NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day with a flag raising ceremony at County Hall in Dorchester on Friday 5 July at 10.45am.

5 July is the national day of thanks to show gratitude to all frontline staff and critical workers, and a day to celebrate all those who have worked so tirelessly to help our country through the Coronavirus crisis, and who continue to support some of the most vulnerable people in society.

It is also a day of remembrance of those who lost their lives during this dreadful time. The Last Post will be performed followed by a two-minute silence and the Reveille.

July work to protect against potholes

As part of our ongoing maintenance programme, a number of roads in our area are to be given an early intervention to seal against water and prevent pot holes.

Known as road preservation, an asphalt liquid is sprayed onto the surface to seal small cracks, preventing water from causing more damage.

Our contractor RMS (Road Maintenance Services Ltd) will be carrying out the work.

It is a quick process that takes place overnight, but while the work takes place there will be road closures with diversions. Neighbouring households will be informed by letter.
