Celebrating Pride in Dorset

Celebrating Dorset’s LGBTQ+ youth community

On Saturday 29 June, Chesil Youth Pride took place – hosted by us and Weymouth College and in partnership with Space Youth Project, The Drop-In Portland, Dorset Music Hub, and Dorset Police.

The fun-filled event held at Weymouth College, was a celebration of diversity and a show of support for Weymouth and Portland’s LGBTQ+ young people. The theme this year, chosen by young people in the local LGBTQ+ community, was ‘Intersectionality,’ with the tag line ‘See Me.’

The event, now in its second year, responds to the feedback we received from LGBTQ+ young people in the Chesil locality, and the need to provide a safe space to celebrate their identity and who they are.

Last weekend we took part in 2 further Pride events in the south.

On Saturday 6 July we were at Bourne Free in Bournemouth. It was its usual flamboyant self……lots of colour, noise, beautiful people and a huge parade which brought the town centre to its annual standstill.

This year, 3 of our newly elected members councillors also joined us in the parade, as well as our very own Equality, Diversity and Equality Officer who is always hugely supportive of Bourne Free.

On Sunday 7 July, we were catapulted into the extravaganza which was the first EVER Pride in the (usually) rather quiet and historic rural Dorset town of Sherborne.

Sherborne Pride was a resounding success! What’s more, we had the honour of sponsoring this event and contributing massively to the success that it was.

We had the biggest turnout of Network members and allies for the Sherborne parade so far this year, we all thoroughly enjoyed the afterparty and, together, we really did make history.

Thank you to everyone who has supported these events.

Dorset Council parking permit now even better value with extra hour

Short stay permits can now be used in most Dorset Council car parks for up to three hours a day, increasing from the previous two-hour limit.

The extra hour has been added to give residents more time to get things done and offer more value for money.

An annual permit offers savings for regular users, and the extended stay time removes some of the worry when attending appointments or completing errands.

At £90 a year for the short stay permit, one weekly three-hour stay averages at just over £1.73 per visit over 52 weeks. This means more time for regular visits to the surgery, to browse the shops, or check in on a family member.

Corroded Wimborne footbridge to be replaced

A popular footbridge to the north of Allenview car park, Wimborne is to be replaced during the 2024 school summer holidays.

Routine inspections found corrosion on the underside of the bridge used by students of the nearby Allenbourn Middle School. Although the corrosion is not a risk to the stability of the bridge, it does require attention.

Due to limited access, it is not possible to undertake the required works in situ. Therefore, the bridge will be removed and a new, more easily maintained, footbridge put in its place.

The old bridge will be refurbished offsite so it can be reused elsewhere.

Child benefit for teenagers this summer

We know how important Child Benefit can be to families, so let HMRC know by 31 August if your teenager, aged 16-19 years old, intends to stay in approved education or training. Extending your Child Benefit ensures you won't miss out on any payments.

If your child changes their mind about further education or training, simply let HMRC know online or in the app and your records will be updated.
