Dorset Council councillors and Dorset Council's Director for Children's Services, Theresa Leavy, celebrate the 60th anniversary of Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre
** Celebrating 60 years of outdoor education in Weymouth
------------------------------------------------------------
On Monday 29 July 2024, we marked the 60th anniversary of Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre (WOEC) with a fun-filled open day.
Several hundred members of the public, current and former employees, and elected councillors, joined in the fun to celebrate 60 years of outdoor education for local children, young people, and families in the Dorset Council area.
Attendees were invited to try adventurous activities, like archery and rock climbing, and were given the chance to explore the centre’s indoor caving tunnels and soft play room.

Two young ambassadors
** Become a Dorset Council Young Ambassador
------------------------------------------------------------
We are looking for more young people to become Dorset Council Young Ambassadors – to act as the voice of young people in Dorset and to help us improve and shape the services we offer to children, young people, and families.
The role of a Young Ambassador involves sitting on our young person interview panel, where you will play a key part in the recruitment process for roles within our Children’s Services.
You will be invited to present the views of young people to decision makers at meetings, input into documents, plans and proposals, and to write documents from the perspective of a young person living in Dorset.

Junction near Upton Country Park
** Junction safety improvements planned near Upton Country Park
------------------------------------------------------------
Wider footways, a parallel crossing and a reduced speed limit are to be introduced near Upton Country Park, off the A35, near Poole.
This will provide safer facilities for walking and cycling and improve safety for drivers, following a number of accidents in recent years.
We are carrying out the work, scheduled to complete in November. It will start on Monday 16 September. To protect the workforce and minimise congestion throughout the roadworks, temporary traffic signals will be in place along with temporary restrictions with signed diversions.

Community groups that are looking to make a difference and need some capital investments are reminded of a local funding source.
The latest round of the Capital Leverage Fund (Round 5) remains open and welcomes applications for projects which will provide new and improved facilities for communities and residents in the Dorset council area.
There are still four weeks left to apply for round five of the grants. The next assessment panel is taking place next month so applications for this round need to be completed no later than 8 September 2024.

** Standing against hate, our response to recent acts of racism and bigotry
------------------------------------------------------------
“Following the disturbances that have been taking place up and down the country, including the protests in Weymouth on Sunday, we deplore the acts of racism and hatred that have unfolded. They are a stark reminder of the work still needed to push bigotry out of our society forever.
"We want Dorset to continue to be a place that celebrates and welcomes people from all walks of life, both those who live here, and those who visit our beautiful county. We are proud of the diversity of our communities, bringing together many different cultures, traditions, and histories. It is this diversity that makes us stronger, more resilient, and more vibrant.

** Estimate how much you may need to pay towards your care
------------------------------------------------------------
We know that people worry about how much the cost of care could be in the future, for them or their loved ones.
We also know that understanding how much you would need to contribute, and how much other organisations would contribute to that care, is both complex and often confusing. This is where our estimator tool comes in.
The tool can assist with future planning and can be used to estimate how much someone may need to pay towards,
* Temporary care in a residential or nursing home
* Permanent care in a residential or nursing home
* Care at home in the community

People taking part in conversations in a gazebo
** A Big conversation
------------------------------------------------------------
This summer we are asking what you think of the council’s priorities. We want to know whether you agree or disagree and what we should change.
One of these priorities is care for our communities. What does it mean to you? Is it important?
Join in with A Big Conversation by giving us your views on this, and our other proposed priorities at one of our events, or take part online.
