Have your say on new housing and employment sites in East Devon
Limited time remains for you to share your thoughts on additional housing and employment sites proposed across East Devon.
These sites have been submitted for consideration since East Devon District Council’s previous Local Plan consultation in early 2023. The Local Plan is the key document used to make planning decisions in East Devon, so it is vital that residents let East Devon District Council know what they think of the proposals.
You have until 5pm on Thursday, 27 June 2024 to share your thoughts online.
Watch this short video to find out more about the consultation.

Phase two of Exmouth’s seawall repairs approved
A further 150 metres of vulnerable seawall will be secured with a steel sheet pile wall in the second phase of repairs to Exmouth’s sea defences, planned for late September.
Andrew Hancock, East Devon District Council’s Assistant Director for Streetscene, said:
"Strengthening Exmouth’s coastal defences for the next 100 years is vital, with increasingly frequent, more severe storms an unfortunate consequence of the climate crisis.”
“Securing the seawall ahead of the winter storm season is an urgent task. The council’s engineers are working incredibly hard to ensure the best options are chosen in terms of financial costs and environmental impacts too.”
“EDDC would like to thank visitors, residents, and local businesses for their patience whilst this important work continues.”

Engineers do a super swift job at Honiton Primary School
National Grid engineer in cherry picker installs swift boxes at Honiton Primary School
National Grid engineers have swapped installing cable boxes for nest boxes to help an East Devon school become a summer home for a bird that’s becoming increasingly rare.
Honiton Primary School now has 10 new boxes to welcome swifts that are arriving from 3,000 miles away in Africa where they have spent the winter.
Dangerous Exmouth tree made safe
A large, mature tree in Exmouth’s Manor Gardens split down the middle, posing the risk of serious damage to anything below.
Luckily, East Devon’s StreetScene team spotted the danger, acting quickly, conducting surgery on the tree to make it safe. A big thanks to the StreetScene team for carrying out this important work, and to residents for their patience whilst the nearby road was closed.
Any small chippings from the removed branches will be chipped and put in the park's beds.
Drop-in sessions organised for Devon County Council's Children’s Centre consultation
Credit: Devon County Council
Devon County Council are consulting parents and carers on proposals for how they would like to use their former Children’s Centre buildings in a new network of Family Hubs across Devon.
DCC are running a series of in-person, drop-in sessions throughout June, with Action for Children, to give parents, carers and young people the opportunity to find out more about the proposals, ask questions, and tell DCC what they think.
Where Children’s Centres in Devon have for some years offered support to families of children aged zero to eight years-old, referred to them by a GP or other professional, the new Family Hubs will offer targeted and universal support to all families of children aged from zero to 19, or up to 25 years old for young people with special educational needs or disabilities.
Where does my food waste go?
We hope you keep your food waste to a minimum, but even the most careful shoppers and skilled cooks will have some food waste.
Food waste is a valuable resource which is used to give a double benefit, generating energy and producing fertiliser for agriculture. Capturing food waste is good for our economy and our environment!
You can use any single use plastic packaging bag to line your indoor food caddy and keep it clean. Our super-recyclers favour using bread bags, liners of cereal boxes and vegetable bags.
All the bags are taken out by a special piece of equipment before the processing stage, so they don’t go into the digestion process.
Visit the Recycling and Waste webpages for more information.
