Lease for former Doncaster Sheffield Airport signed

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones this week announced that a lease to take over the former Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) has been signed.

The 125-year lease will help to ensure the future of the airport site with an ambition to return planes to the skies from the city.

The announcement follows over a year of detailed and complex negotiations with landowners the Peel Group. The lease agreement is the first stage in the process to reopen the airport. The next stage is the appointment of an airport operator to manage the operational airport.

Can you help police find missing Pam from Wheatley?

Our partners at South Yorkshire Police continue to seek information about the whereabouts of missing Pam from the Wheatley area of Doncaster.

Pam, who also goes by the name of Shirley and is 63 years old, was last seen at a property on Winchester Avenue a week ago on Thursday 14 March at around 7pm. Enquiries have led to sightings of a woman who is believed to be Pam on CCTV on Winchester Avenue and Thorne Road around 30 minutes later, shortly before 7.30pm.

Since this time, specialist officers from across the force have been working tirelessly to trace Pam’s movements and locate her. Partner organisations, community groups and family and friends have also supported efforts, giving out posters and helping to spread the word.

Pam is still missing and there have been no further confirmed sightings of her since last Thursday evening.

Pam is described as a white woman with short, mousey brown hair, of average build and is 5ft 7ins tall.

She was last seen wearing a black coat, black trousers, black boots and is believed to be carrying a white carrier bag. She also wears a gold cross and chain necklace.

South Yorkshire Police are asking people across Doncaster to continue to look out for anything that may help them to find Pam. This includes searching your sheds, gardens and outhouses for anything that’s out of the ordinary.

They are also urging anyone with CCTV, dash cam or doorbell footage which they haven’t already shared with officers to report it to them.

If you have any information, no matter how small you believe it to be, please get in touch with South Yorkshire Police online or by calling 101 quoting incident number 1228 of 14 March 2024.

Please send any footage to enquiries@southyorkshire.police.uk with the incident number in the subject line.

Are you putting your rubbish into the correct bins?

We’re all being asked to recycle right to avoid the amount of waste collected which can’t be recycled, costing over £300,000 per year to rectify.

Currently, almost a third of Doncaster’s waste put into the recycle bins can’t actually be recycled.

To try and change this, a new bin tagging scheme is being rolled out across Doncaster, where crews will leave tags on bins that have the wrong items in them, and the bins won’t be emptied.

If your bin is tagged, you’ll need to check it and take out anything that is in the wrong bin. The crews will then empty the bin on the next scheduled collection day.

Supporting Doncaster’s Carers

Carers do an amazing job in supporting their friend, family member or partner to help them live their life. This is sometimes called informal care because it is unpaid.

All carers should get the right recognition and support which is why the Doncaster’s Carers Journey 2024 was discussed at Cabinet recently to look back on what has been done to support informal carers in 2023 and what is planned to be achieved over 2024.

The Carers Journey was a collaborative effort with Doncaster carers who were able to share their experiences of their caring role and what their priorities are for 2024.

Choose What You’ll Use

Residents in Doncaster are being urged to discover the benefits of buying loose fruit and vegetables as part of the UK’s biggest annual food waste reduction campaign.

Food Waste Action Week 2024 is encouraging citizens to buy loose items to help reduce food waste. Research has shown that:

  • Food waste costs hundreds of pounds per year
  • Buying loose helps you find the right amount of fruit and veg to fit your family’s needs instead of pre-packaged food where you could be buying more than you need.
  • Buying loose could reduce plastic packaging by 8,800 tonnes per year.
  • It could help to save more than 80,000 tonnes CO2e emissions.

The campaign aims to show how simple behaviours to reduce food waste can save time and money. This will ultimately reduce the impact of food waste on climate change.

Buying loose and buying local is something that can be done in one of several Doncaster markets.

Information about these can be found here:

Also, in partnership with waste partners Suez Recycling and Recovery UK (Suez), we have updated posters on our bin lorries to remind people to plan, prepare and control their portions sizes.
