More on the event

Family Hubs

Doncaster Family Hubs are guided by the Baby Friendly Initiative Standards in offering infant feeding support to our families. The Baby Friendly Initiative supports families to care for their children's health and well-being, whatever their feeding choices.

Our family hubs provide a warm and welcoming environment for mothers to breastfeed in all areas of the Family Hubs. They also offer mother centred information to support families to make informed decisions on feeding.

Staff at the Family Hubs are trained and available to answer questions about infant feeding, including: responsive feeding, expression of breastmilk, feeding when out and about, and returning to work. They also offer support with one to one contact, and can help connect you to other services for you and your baby.

Groups at the Family Hubs

The family hubs also run a series of classes and groups that can support you with feeding your baby, or offer a safe space to feed in a supportive environment whilst socialising with other parents and children:

  • Breast start – open to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, with older children welcome.
  • Baby Massage – all parents are invited to attend when their baby reaches the appropriate age.
  • First friends / Baby Fun – open to pregnant women, and mothers and their babies. (Babies must be unable to crawl or walk to attend)
  • Busy Babies – a follow on session from First Friends open to parents and their babies from crawling to walking.
  • Stay and Play (0-5s) – open to parents and their children aged 0-5yrs.

Early Days Workers

Early Days Workers are here to support you and your family in those early days of parenthood, from pregnancy and right through the first 18 months of your child’s life. Each of our 12 Family Hubs has an Early Days Worker within the Hub and the local community.

If you're currently on a pregnancy journey, the Early Days Worker will be an important part of your support network and a face you will regularly see. Alongside formal appointments, they are on-hand at the Family Hubs to offer support and guidance with any issues, queries or questions you might have.

All our Early Days Workers are trained to offer specific support with breastfeeding and other infant feeding choices.  They also have a wealth of knowledge about Doncaster's early years offer to be able to signpost you to the right place, be that a baby group, a health professional, or where to find childcare information.

Breastfeeding in heat advice

The warm weather has arrived and in hot weather, your baby may want to feed more often or for longer than usual. If they're under 6 months and exclusively breastfed, there's no need to give any additional water - just feed on demand to keep them hydrated and make sure you're getting plenty of fluids yourself.

Your body will generally continue producing enough milk for your baby's demand (except if you are extremely dehydrated), but keep on top of your water and ice lolly intake for your own wellbeing! Babies over 6 months who have started eating solid foods should be offered water in a cup with meals, and throughout the day in hot weather.

You can find out more on sun safety for your baby through the NHS website.
