South West Water advice following confirmed cases of cryptosporidium
People in and around the Brixham area of Devon, including Kingswear, were advised earlier this week by South West Water (SWW) [
] not to drink tap water without boiling it first after low levels of cryptosporidium were found in the area’s water supply.
SWW is working closely with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Environment Agency to urgently investigate how the parasite got into the network so it can be fixed, and the drinking water supply returned as quickly as possible.
Torbay Council is updating their website [
] and social media channels with information as the situation changes.
In the meantime, SWW has set up three bottled water collection points [
] at Churston Car Boot Field, entrance on Langdon Lane, TQ5 0PG; Broadsands Car Park, TQ4 6HX; and Freshwater Quarry Car Park, TQ5 8BA. These collection points are open until 9pm this evening.
Vulnerable households are receiving deliveries of bottled water every 24 hours. Anyone who is vulnerable or on the Priority Services register and hasn’t yet received a delivery of bottled water can contact SWW directly on 0344 346 1010. [ tel:%2003443461010 ]
For most people, cryptosporidium symptoms can be managed at home without needing medical advice. NHS Devon ask that you do not contact medical services to report cases unless you need clinical care. Visit the NHS website for advice about treating diarrhoea and vomiting. [
]
Please visit the Government's website [
] for more information about what cryptosporidium is, who is at risk, what the symptoms are, how to avoid getting it and passing it on and how to treat it.

New Devon Music Education Hub
We’re leading a new organisation which will continue to ensure that all children in Devon, Plymouth and Torbay will have the chance to play an instrument, learn to sing and create music.
We are already responsible for the existing Music Hubs for Devon and Torbay, and from September we will work with Plymouth Youth Music Service to lead music education provision across the region.
The new Devon Music Educational Hub will provide high-quality music education and teacher training and give children the opportunity to pursue their musical interests and develop their skills.

Marland School congratulated for ‘outstanding’ Ofsted
Our Cabinet Member for services that support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, (SEND), Councillor Lois Samuel, has congratulated Marland School for achieving an ‘outstanding’ grade following a recent Ofsted inspection.
Marland School, in Torrington, is part of a foundation trust of other special schools and provides residential care for up to 40 boys aged eight to 16 years old.
Ofsted visited in February to look at their social care provision and their inspectors were impressed with what they saw. They said the experiences and progress of the children, leadership in the school and how well children and young people were helped and protected were all ‘outstanding’.

Devon Hotel roundabout [

Devon Hotel roundabout improvements complete
The upgrade of the Devon Hotel roundabout has been completed as part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements in south west Exeter.
Capacity has been increased on the western arm of the roundabout, with an additional lane entering the roundabout. The central island has also been realigned, and traffic signals and a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing have been installed.
The improvements are part of the ongoing £55 million infrastructure enhancements, funded by the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund, to support the development of 2,500 new homes and employment land on the edge of the city.
Work is also continuing on the A379 Trood Lane junction which is being widened and realigned to provide access to housing development. This includes the installation of footpaths, bus laybys and a pedestrian crossing.

Want to know the name of the planned new Okehampton station?
The name of a new railway station near Okehampton has been revealed in a special ceremony!
Key figures from Great Western Railway; Network Rail; Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council, along with Central Devon MP, Mel Stride, gathered at the site of the planned new station to unveil its name.
The station will be known as Okehampton Interchange! It will be on the edge of Okehampton and is only a two-minute drive from the A30 to improve rail access for North Cornwall and West Devon.
