Adoption services for Cornwall Council and the Isles of Scilly joined our Regional Adoption Agency, Adopt South West, on Monday 1 April 2024.
This means that the region covered by Adopt South West now includes the local authority areas of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Plymouth, Torbay and Somerset.
Adopt South West was established in 2018, following the Government’s introduction of Regional Adoption Agencies, bringing together adoption teams from neighbouring authorities to create a single agency in the South West.
The aim of a Regional Adoption Agency is to improve the recruitment of adopters, to help children move into their permanent families as promptly as possible and to offer robust adoption support across a wider region.
Nicola and Robert, recent adopters from Cornwall, said:
“We recently started our adoption journey with Cornwall Council and were matched with a child in the Adopt South West area, this meant that our adoption journey that had we been waiting in Cornwall for a child to adopt was much quicker.
“The team has been fantastic, guiding and supporting us through the adoption process and the training that was afforded to us was amazing in preparing us to adopt.
“Adopt South West has been absolutely brilliant from their seamless communication throughout to the ongoing support we are now receiving.”

You Can Adopt is looking for people to feature in a new national public campaign to recruit adopters and highlight the rewarding journey of adopting a child. The campaign aims to highlight that while it may never feel like the ‘perfect’ time to start your adoption journey, and while there will be ups and downs along the way, it is worth it to change a child’s life by giving them a permanent home.
They would love to hear from a variety of voices, from different regions, backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders and ethnicities, who can speak passionately about their adoption journeys – including the ups and downs, the rewards and the challenges, and ultimately why it’s been so worthwhile. Find out more details and how to apply, on our website.
If this sounds like something you are interested in doing, please have a chat with a member of our Adopt South West team by emailing adoptsouthwest@devon.gov.uk before Wednesday 24 April.
If you'd prefer to call us, our number is 0345 155 1076 and our office hours are 9am to 1pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
We'd be grateful if you would share this with any adopted families and people in your networks.
If you can provide a loving, permanent and secure home for a child, we want to hear from you
We particularly need people to adopt children with disabilities, little boys over four-years-old, and brothers and sisters who are looking for a home to stay together. If you are willing to consider a child with additional health needs, a sibling group of brothers, or a brother and sister group, then we can offer you an Adoption Support Package for your family, and there may also be other appropriate financial allowances.
Are you considering adopting a child under four years old? We offer fostering for adoption to protect these children from experiencing multiple moves within the care system.
Adopting a child can be hard work and very challenging, it is a lifelong commitment and your new child will become part of your forever family. You will need an open mind and plenty of patience, but your ability to care is what matters most.
There are children all over Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Plymouth, Somerset and Torbay looking for safe and loving homes. We'd love to hear from people across the different communities who can offer children a permanent home.
Adoption is a big decision, but the rewards are immeasurable for everyone. Take a look at some inspiring real life family stories from local people who have already adopted.
Could you consider adopting a child with a disability?
All children long for the love and stability of being part of a family, yet children with additional health needs or disabilities wait longer to be adopted.
Amanda White, Head of Adopt South West, explains:
If you are interested in adopting any of the children currently waiting the longest, please get in touch with our friendly team. We'll support you - contact us.
Children who need adoption come from a variety of backgrounds, so we need adopters with a wide range of knowledge, skills, and lifestyles. We are interested in what you have to offer a child who needs adopting rather than your marital status, finances, whether you own a house or already have children.
There are many myths and misconceptions about adoption.
- We welcome everyone, regardless of your sexuality or gender identity - this is not a factor in your right to adopt.
- We are open minded to your relationship status, or if you own or rent your home.
- You don’t have to follow any religion and people from all ethnic origins are needed.
- Disability is not a barrier to becoming an adopter and often experience of disability will be positively welcomed.
- Adopters need to be over 21 but there is no upper age limit.
