Nicotine replacement therapy

Lots of people find that NRT really helps them get over the initial quitting hump. There’s different options available including patches, gum and inhalators.

Below is a brief overview of some of them, but please speak to a professional about which method will work best for you.

Live Life Better Derbyshire offers free NRT to our clients - another great reason to join us!

Nictotine patches

  • A patch is stuck on to the skin which releases nicotine into the bloodstream
  • It gives a small and steady amount of nicotine
  • Patches come in different strengths
  • You could experience some skin irritation when using patches

Nicotine gum

  • To release the nicotine, you slowly chew the gum until the taste is strong
  • You then rest it between your cheek and the gum to get nicotine into your bloodstream
  • The disadvantage is that you might not like the taste or always having something in your mouth
  • Gum is not suitable if you wear dentures.

Lozenges

  • You place the lozenge in your mouth like a hard sweet
  • Place the lozenge at the side of your mouth, between your gum and your cheek
  • Let it dissolve – do not swallow it.
  • It releases nicotine as it slowly dissolves.

Inhalators

  • Nicotine cartridges are inserted into the inhalator and inhaled in an action similar to smoking
  • You inhale through the mouthpiece to receive a specific amount of nicotine
  • It is particularly suitable if you miss the ‘hand-to-mouth’ movements of smoking.

Mouth spray

  • This provides a very rapid increase in nicotine level
  • You can use one or two sprays whenever you get the urge to smoke
  • You should not use more than two sprays at a time, four sprays in an hour or more than 64 sprays over the whole day
  • You might notice irritation of the throat or nose.

There are also several different prescriptions medications that can help with cravings.

Our advisors would be happy to talk you though your options and help you decide which would work for you – you might need to try a few before you find one that works best.

We offer FREE NRT to our Live Life Better Derbyshire clients and we can post this out to you too!
