February potholes update

image

We know that potholes on our roads is an issue of great concern to our residents. This week we published another open letter from Cllr Charlotte Cupit, Cabinet Member for Highways Assets and Transport, and Julian Gould, Director of Highways, as an update on our work on the roads.

You can find the update here, but it did give details of the extra resources we have put in to tackle the pothole backlog, which includes:

  • Up to 25 reactive teams who have been filling over 2000 potholes a week since the start of the year
  • As many teams as possible out 7 days a week
  • A focus on hot tarmac (‘hotbox’) repairs where we can and on cutting out and sealing larger areas where possible
  • Four extra ‘bumper’ teams working on big sectional resurfacing in hotspots (you might have seen these so far on the A515, the A6 or the A57 but they’re moving across the county)
  • Further highways teams across the county carrying out patch resurfacing ahead of the capital surface dressing in the summer
  • Accelerating our additional hotspot resurfacing programme of 250 sites where we’ve got a cluster of potholes. We’ve done 35 sites already this year and have 40 more scheduled over the next few months

Please report any potholes you spot to us on our website.

Getting your blood pressure checked is easy, and it could save your life

Do you know your blood pressure numbers? One in three adults in the UK have high blood pressure and most people don’t realise it. But if you're aged over 40 you can get it checked for free at pharmacies and community clinics.

image

High blood pressure doesn’t have any obvious symptoms but it is a major cause of heart attack and stroke, and can also lead to a number of serious long-term health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and kidney disease.

It's really important to get your blood pressure checked so you can catch high blood pressure early, then take simple steps to reduce it and lower the risk to your health.

Our Live Life Better Derbyshire team are holding free check-ups around the country over the coming months. You can find out where they will be by clicking "find out more" below.

Have your say on emergency fund

Help shape the future of a Derbyshire emergency fund which supports the county’s most vulnerable residents by taking part in our consultation.

The Derbyshire Discretionary Fund (DDF) provides grants or emergency cash payments for people in urgent need of financial help following a crisis or disaster.

Following an increase in demand for the fund, we’re considering changes to ensure it can continue to support those who need help most and we’re running a public consultation to find out what residents think. Proposals include:

  • Increasing the amount payable in an emergency cash payment in line with either inflation or increases in benefit rates.
  • Developing criteria for a ‘budget brake’ in the fund – to help the council reprioritise it at times of greatest demand.
  • Limiting the maximum number of emergency cash payments to two in any twelve-month period – it currently stands at three. This would be in line with most other councils that offer this kind of support.

The consultation runs until Sunday March 17 and we’re keen to hear what people think of the proposals.

You can find out more about why the changes are being proposed and fill in the online questionnaire on the county council’s website

For a paper copy of the survey, or if you need it in an alternative format, please email ddf@derbyshire.gov.uk
