The process to becoming a foster carer

Hello again, in this our penultimate bulletin we talk about the process of becoming a foster carer.

As part of the application process you will need to provide us with the contact details of two friends for personal references and a family member who would be able to comment on your ability and skills in caring for a child or young person.

We will also want to speak to any adult children you have and in most cases any ex-partners.

We’ll ask for references from employers and carry out a disclosure and barring check (sometimes called DBS checks).

You would also be required to undertake a full medical, provided for by us, to determine your physical and emotional suitability to become a foster carer.

During the assessment process, you must disclose any criminal offences so we can discuss your suitability as a carer. While we can accept that some offences will not limit your chance to foster, some offences will automatically prevent you from proceeding through the assessment.

As part of the application process you will need to attend three days of pre-approval training with other prospective carers and attend the Derbyshire Fostering Panel to discuss your application at the end of the assessment process.

The approval panel

All the information gathered about you and your background during your home study is presented to a panel of professional and independent people who have the skills and experience to make recommendation about your approval as a foster carer.

A recommendation to approve your application is presented to the fostering agency decision maker who formally makes the decision to approve.

We will be honest with you about our findings and show you the report that is written by us for the fostering panel. We will give you a timescale for the assessment process and keep you informed if any of the checks need to be followed up further.

This is all done for the safety of the foster children. We understand how daunting this may look to some people and just how much information we are requesting from you and how intrusive this process can feel at times. It’s not as bad as it sounds, and we’ll be there to support you every step of the way. All information you give us is treated in complete confidence.

In our final bulletin we’ll talk about what happens once you’re approved as a foster carer.

Till next time,

The Fostering Team
