Explore Workington’s Gateway project at drop-in event
A public drop-in event, which will showcase one of the major investment plans for Workington, will be held on Wednesday 7 August between 10am and 3.30pm at Workington’s open-air market.
Work is beginning on the Workington Gateway which involves the key junction at Ramsay Brow and Bridge Street, and improvements to Hall Brow and Hall Park.

The award-winning Uncovering Roman Carlisle (URC) has returned to Carlisle’s Roman Bathhouse for a short mini-archaeological dig.
Archaeologists and volunteers hope to excavate a so far unexplored part of the site to discover the size of the original bathhouse, now thought the be the largest building on Hadrian’s Wall. The true size of the building (currently estimated at 60m by 50m) is one the remaining mysteries of the site.
The dig at Carlisle Cricket Club started on Tuesday 30 July and will take place until Saturday 3 August. Volunteers will be on site each day to speak to visitors between 10am and 4pm.
Limited spaces are available for volunteers. No prior experience in archaeology is needed, just enthusiasm in learning about Carlisle’s past.

Summer Seaside exhibition at The Beacon Museum

You can enjoy all the fun of the seaside by visiting The Beacon Museum this summer.
New for 2024, the Whitehaven museum team has brought the beach indoors with a new exhibition covering the history of the seaside since the Victorian era.
Running until 13 October in the Harbour Gallery, it looks at how the changes in working conditions and the development of the railways during the 19th Century meant that working people began to flock to the country’s beaches on their days off.
Day trips to the beach and Thomas Cook’s brand-new package holidays meant healthy sea air away from city smog, as well as plenty of fun for all the family playing games and watching entertainments in the music halls, piers and arcades.

Taste of the Sea, Maryport

Head down to Maryport’s historic harbourside next weekend for Taste Cumbria’s Taste of the Sea festival.
Now in its fourth year, this extravaganza of food and drink is getting bigger and better. It takes place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August 2024 in a slightly different seafront location - on the grassland at Marine Road, next to Maryport Marina.

Aspatria Library has been transformed to combine the local library and children's centre into a modern, fit-for-purpose building designed to meet the needs of residents. While the cool water in Cumbria may look appealing for a dip in this heat, there can be many hidden dangers under the surface of the water.
Please be aware of the dangers of pier jumping, as going into the water can be risky for several reasons, such as sudden cold, hidden dangerous objects, strong currents, and potential for illness or infections.

* Tilt your head back, ears submerged.
* Relax and try to breathe normally.
* Move your hands to help you stay afloat.
* It's OK if your legs sink, we all float differently.
* Spread your arms and legs to improve stability.
Call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard if you get in trouble near the water or see someone struggling. Never enter the water to help a person or animal.

Carlisle Southern Link Road celebrate one year on site!

Cumberland Council is thrilled to announce the one-year anniversary of the Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) project. This significant milestone marks a year of progress and collaboration in developing an 8km road that will connect Junction 42 of the M6 with the A595 at Newby West.
The CSLR project is set to ease congestion in Carlisle city centre and support the development of St Cuthbert’s Garden Village.
To mark the occasion, a celebration event, held on Wednesday 24 July, brought together key stakeholders and funders, including representatives from Homes England, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, principal contractor Galliford Try Infrastructure, and supply chain partners.
The event highlighted the project’s successes to date, ongoing and completed social value initiatives, economic benefits and looking forward to the next year.
Delegates enjoyed a site tour to see for themselves the progress to date with an opportunity to ask questions to contractors.
