Bank holiday services
A reminder of our services over the bank holiday weekend and in to next week.
Some offices - including Carlisle’s Civic Centre and Cumbria House, Allerdale House in Workington, and Market Hall in Whitehaven - will be closed on Monday 27 May. Online services will be available at

The main customer number (0300 373 3730) will close at 4pm on Friday 24 May and will reopen following the bank holiday on Tuesday 28 May - 9am. There will be a recorded message advising of the closure period and out of hours contact numbers for Highways, Homelessness, and Adults and Children’s Social Care, should anyone be calling in an emergency.
Other opening times, out of hours arrangements, and relevant information, is as follows:
*Household waste and recycling collections*
There will be no changes to refuse and recycling collections on the bank holiday. Collections will take place on Monday 27 May.

The permit helpline is closed on bank holidays and weekends.
*Cumberland Highways* The Highways Hotline (0300 373 3736) will be unavailable on Monday 27 May.
Calls will be diverted to an answer phone service with emergency contact information. Residents can report problems relating to potholes, road damage, flooding, drainage, traffic lights, streetlights, pedestrian crossings, trees, vegetation, bollards, manhole covers and more on our highways webpage.

*Health and Social Care* Residential and home care services operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Adult Social Care offices will be closed on Monday 27 May.
Contact the social care out of hours emergency service (01228 526690), 24-hours a day, for adult social care emergencies. Further information is available on our health and social care webpage.

*Children's Services (for children's social care)* Children's services offices will be closed on Monday 27 May. The Emergency Duty Team (0333 240 1727) can be contacted 24 hours a day for children’s social care emergencies.
*Archives, Libraries and Local Link offices* The Archive Centres (Carlisle and Whitehaven) will be closed on Monday 27 May.

Whitehaven harbour
Sound installation at Whitehaven Harbour
A sound installation By Sound Near Seawall by Turner Prize winning artist, Susan Philipsz, will sound out from Whitehaven Harbour from Friday 24 May 2024 and will continue to be heard on the hour from 10am until 5pm every day.
The artwork is a two-channel sound installation and was created by recording the sound of two conch shells from the Caribbean. They are played from two horn speakers installed on the North and West lighthouses.

West Road at Thirlmere reopens
West Road at Thirlmere has reopened after essential repairs to Rough Crag have finally been completed by landowner, United Utilities.
Following the necessary repairs, the final detailed report from United Utilities was handed to the council’s geotechnical consultants and highways officers this week. Over the past two weeks various technical questions were raised with United Utilities regarding the draft report that was issued at the beginning of May. These matters have now been resolved.

Make a splash this half term!
Children swimming
All schoolchildren aged up to 16 years old from the Cumberland area will be able to go for a swim in a choice of five indoor pools for only 10p over the May half term (Saturday 25 to Sunday 2 June)
The discounted scheme has been put in place by Cumberland Council, with the support of GLL [
] and Wigton Baths Trust [
].
The council scheme will offer discounted swimming opportunities throughout the week.
It will be available at the following leisure sites at allocated times during the half term school holidays:
* Cockermouth Leisure Centre: Tuesday 28 to Friday 31 May – 1:00-1:50pm
* Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre (Whitehaven): Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday - 1pm-1.50pm. Sundays – 10:00-10.50am
* The Sands Centre (Carlisle): Saturday 25 - Sunday 2 June - 10:00-10:50am
* Wigton Baths: Monday 27 May 10am - 11.30 (Family Swim session), Tuesday 28 May 11am - 12.00 (Children's 10p swim), Wednesday 29 May 3pm to 4pm (Children's 10p swim), Thursday 30 May 3pm to 4pm (Children's 10p swim), Friday 31 May 10.15am - 11.45 (Family Swim session), Saturday 1 June 9.30 - 11.30 (Family Swim session)

Upcoming events
Keswick Market
Keswick market (Saturday 25 May)
Keswick market traders will be bringing a bit of country and western to their market stalls this Saturday (25 May) in support of a local charity.
As well as traders dressing for the occasion, they’ll be themed music, a Toy Story backdrop for photos and fancy-dress corner.
They’ll also be Jessie the Cowgirl and Woody Mascots, dancing Toy Story songs for the children and Lille old fashioned outdoor games - a prize every time.
Cowgirl Barbie will also make an appearance, with Barbie Box for photos.
Saloon Girl doing western tattoos and glitter paints and the chance to take part in a charity raffle.
Traders are going to raise as much money as we can for this year’s Keswick Market Designated Charity 2024.
Come along and support local traders as well as making charitable donations.
The market will be held on Saturday 25 May, between 9am and 5pm in Keswick market square.
Cumberland Cobbler Solway Coast Cycling Festival (Saturday 8 June)
The Cumberland Cobbler Solway Coast Cycling Festival will be held in the pretty seaside town of Silloth on Saturday 8 June, between 10am and 5pm.
This year sees a new route with more of the circuit on tarmac but this is still a tight, technically demanding course with a significant stretch of cobbles and a lot of corners to test your skills.
All cycling events are organised by Carlisle Cycling Association with support from British Cycling. The deadline to sign up is Saturday 25 May. Apply online at
Organised by Cumberland Council, the main festival activities will be held on Silloth Green.
This year’s event will include special guest GB cyclist Philip Hines, Crank It cycling activities including jump track, time trail course, skills challenge coaching and balance bike races, BMX showcase, fun fairs, live music and a producers’ market.
Upperby Gala postponed
The community event in Carlisle planned for bank holiday Monday has been postponed due to saturated ground conditions.
Upperby Gala, was due to be held at Hammond’s Pond, Carlisle on Monday 27 May between 1pm and 4pm.
The recent weather conditions have resulted in the grounds being waterlogged and we have taken the difficult decision to postpone the event to a date to be confirmed later this year.

Harraby North ward election for Cumberland Council
A Notice of Election for the Harraby North ward election has been published. Anyone wishing to stand has until 4pm on Friday 31 May 2024 to submit their nomination papers.
If the election is contested it will be held on 27 June 2024.

Spot the nuclear clean up dog at the Cumberland Council stand at UKREiiF
Spot the robotic dog
Spot the robotic dog took centre stage at Cumberland Council’s UKREiiF stand this week.
It has become a regular feature at Sellafield and a great mascot for the range of robotic tools and innovations that are transforming the way we work.
It travelled with Cumberland Council to UKREiiF hosted in Leeds and you can meet it on their stand - H40.
The benefits of investing in Cumberland will be showcased at the three-day business conference (Tuesday 21 - Thursday 23 May). The showcase is set to attract 12,000 delegates and more than 1,500 potential investors.
UKREiiF connects people, places and businesses to accelerate and unlock sustainable, inclusive and transformational investment.
The annual event brings together the public sector - with every core UK city and region involved - alongside government, investors, funders, developers, housebuilders and more.
Cumberland Council is attending the business event for the second time and aims to promote the area, its investment opportunities and development plans.

Carlisle Civic Mayor
A Mayor Making ceremony has been held for the new Mayor of Carlisle, Cumberland Councillor, Chris Southward.
The Charter Trustees of the City of Carlisle, made up of 11 Cumberland Councillors, appointed Cllr Southward into the Civic role in May and a ‘Mayor Making’ ceremony was held at Carlisle’s Civic Centre on Wednesday 22 May.
Janette Whalen is the Deputy Mayor of Carlisle.

Operator sought for exciting new Millom facilities
Potential operators are being sought for two schemes included within the Millom Town Deal programme. The process provides the chance for potential operators to submit their interest.
The projects are:
* Ironline will see the uniquely beautiful sea wall and coastal lagoon off the coast of Millom sensitively enhanced to form an inspirational and fully inclusive route across RSPB Hodbarrow with upwards of 7km of walking and cycling routes to be enhanced as part of the project. A new welcome centre will be created, incorporating a café/bar, retail space and multi-use events room alongside adjacent parking for around 80 vehicles.
* Arts and Enterprise Centre part of the Reactivating Heritage Buildings projects will see the creation of an Arts and Enterprise Centre within the former NatWest bank building, which will include a cafe and exhibition space, a co-working space for businesses to collaborate and share knowledge, a makers market area, a retail display area, a start-up enterprise space, studios and workshops.
