What’s new?
The pace of regeneration work in Maryport has really picked up since the Government announced its approval for loads of new projects in the Autumn of last year.
The Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities gave its approval to £5 million of schemes to revitalise the town centre, Wave, harbourside and promenade. That means £12 million in total is currently being spent in Maryport - an amazing investment in the fabulous town.

Wave
A new name for the Wave
After years of mutterings that the name of the Wave centre was misleading, the Maryport Town Board suggested the building be renamed to better reflect what goes on inside. Schoolchildren from across the town were asked to suggest some potential new names and, after a public consultation, the title ‘Maryport Activity Centre’ was chosen. It’s great timing because the building is about to undergo a major revamp which means the name change won’t incur any costs. New signage has been incorporated into the redesign of the building which will include a new adventure play area for young children, upgrades to Clip n’ Climb and the gymnasium, and the creation of new multifunctional rooms. Thomas Armstrong Group, of Flimby, and the design team from Align Property Partners in Cockermouth, now have the contract to complete the works. Planning permission has been granted for the changes and construction teams will start on site in March.

The Harbour
The Harbourside
Contracts to create a new event space have been won by Thomas Armstrong Group of Flimby. Meanwhile, plans to build a fun splashpark and upgrade Shiver me Timbers are out to tender. There will be a stage for live performances and a market area. Look out for the upcoming consultations on the upgraded play parks.

The boardwalk
The Boardwalk
This new accessible pathway across La’al Harbour was officially opened on 5 February, easily linking the Harbourside with the Prom. The Boardwalk is part of the transformation of Maryport’s public realm using money from the Government’s Future High Streets Fund. Cowran Estates Services Ltd, based in Ulverston, was the main contractor and used the skills of local subcontractors to complete the project. Coastal-resilient beefriendly wildflowers will be planted there this Spring.

Public realm
Senhouse Street has now reopened after being temporarily closed so that parallel parking can be installed, cluttered street furniture removed, and new signage is due to be installed all over town.

The Promenade
The Prom
The disused toilet block will be removed and a new cafe and beach shop will be created. The contractor will be Cubby Construction of Carlisle and a planning application will be submitted soon. A new bike and skate track will also be built on the land adjacent to the cafe. This fabulous new eatery, with views across the Solway, will really put the Prom on the map for families, foodies, locals and visitors alike. Maryport people of all ages are being consulted on the design of the bike and skate track and there is loads of enthusiasm from young people for this great new facility.

Christ Church
Christ Church
Work on the exterior of the building is reaching a conclusion and now the interior is being dramatically remodelled to create the new Maritime Museum. Steelwork is being installed to create a new mezzanine floor, while, behind the scenes, Maryport artist Alan Roper is helping to create some unique features inside the building, and the interpretation panels to explain the Museum collection are being drafted. The clock has also been restored and reinstated by the experts from The Cumbrian Clock Company in Penrith, welcoming seafarers back to the town once more.

The Carlton
The Carlton
Building work is underway to transform this Senhouse Street landmark into a performance venue and workshops, with a new entrance created where a neighbouring derelict building has been removed. Whitehaven-based BEC are managing this project on behalf of the Council, while Align Property Partners in Cockermouth and Thomas Armstrong Group, of Flimby, are carrying out the design and build.

Love Maryport Living
Sixteen disused upper floor properties have been brought back to life, encouraging more people to live and stay in the town centre, giving an additional boost to Maryport businesses. They’re all due to be ready for their new residents in April. Some of them are private rental accommodation while others are holiday lets. Lots of local construction firms have worked on their transformation including Workington-based Stobbarts and E&C Armstrong Bros of Whitehaven. Grants were provided by the Government’s Future High Streets Fund and Cumberland Council.

Shipping Brow Gallery
Shipping Brow Gallery
This brilliant new attraction is now open to all from Wednesday to Sunday, complete with an artist in residence, Felix Butterwick. The gallery will be run by Maryport art lovers Dolly and Brian Money who have set up a charitable trust to secure its future. The extensive renovation and conversion of the building has been managed by its owners, Cumberland Council, with funding provided by Historic England and the former Allerdale Borough Council. The contractors were Workington-based contractor Stobbarts Ltd.

Events

The Taste Cumbria Taste of the Sea food festival takes place in the town centre and on the harbourside on Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 August 2024. Meet the Maryport regeneration team, get tours of the projects and find out more about the investment taking place in Maryport.
