Coming up in this week's update from Cumberland Council...
Both Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council are thrilled to announce the launch of Enterprising Cumbria, in a further step to transfer functions from Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP) to the two unitary councils. This is a milestone in the journey to providing a strong, pan-Cumbrian voice for businesses across the region.
Enterprising Cumbria will take on the function and purpose of the previous CLEP and provide a powerful voice for a diverse array of businesses across the Cumbrian footprint, building upon the work of the CLEP in supporting economic growth, investing in skills, and promoting Cumbria as a great place to live, work, and do business.
Lead Members from both Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council have supported the development of the new Enterprising Cumbria, which will be delivering on the priorities of both councils, businesses and our residents over the next few months. This launch is supported by a brand-new identity, which will have a strong, visible presence locally, regionally, nationally and internationally to promote Cumbria.
Enterprising Cumbria will be led by the newly appointed Isobel Brown, who started in her role as Interim Programme Director on Monday 17 June. She will lead the new Enterprising Cumbria team, who transferred from the CLEP on 1 April 2024. Isobel brings a wealth of experience having worked with a number of Councils in England as well as both local and central government and the private sector across the UK.

Thank you to libraries, community and sports centres, for hosting the electricals recycling bin in support of this project. As notified at the start of the project, it was funded for a limited period only and that time is now coming to an end.
Our contractor Cumbria Recycling Limited has started to collect the bins as of yesterday (Thursday 11 July).
As the bins are being removed the locations will also be removed from the sponsors website, to minimise the number of people turning up to locations.
Thank you to all concerned for your support with this project.

Preparatory works that will support the development of a new multi-million project in Workington got underway on Saturday 13 July.
The Workington Innovation Centre will be located on part of the Central Car Park in the town centre and will, primarily, be aimed at digital technology and advanced manufacturing businesses. The vision is to establish it as a distinctive focal point for the incubation and growth of entrepreneurial businesses and will also address the lack of modern office accommodation in Workington.
To enable the works to get underway, Central Car Park will be closed from Saturday and will remain closed during the construction of the new site. Some car parking spaces are also unavailable from today (Wednesday 10 July). Alterative parking is available within the town including the nearby multi-storey car park and Brow Top.
The Innovation Centre is part of the Workington Town Deal - £23.1 million of Government funding for ambitious projects ranging from a new sports village to improvements to Workington Port.

Cocker Bridge in Cockermouth has reopened to two-way traffic.
Following a further structural assessment, a new safeguard has been put in place that has allowed the bridge to reopen and remain protected from the partially collapsed Old Courthouse building nearby.
An alternative screening protection has been put in place and the scaffolding on the bridge has been removed.
Cockermouth's Charities Week
The bridge reopening coincides with Cockermouth’s Charities Week which starts on Monday 15 July.
The event is organised by Cockermouth & District Chamber of Trade with stalls all around the streets on Saturday 20 July.
Most of the businesses are organising their own fundraising efforts, with competitions, games, prize draws and more for the charities of their choice. There will also be a free children’s treasure hunt and an Eat in To Help Out initiative to encourage residents to cook for their friends in return for a donation.

Two new events are bringing chaotic fun and classy dining to Maryport during this year’s Taste of the Sea festival.
The madcap Bingo Loco experience and a Fish and Fizz Supper will take place on Saturday 10 August and tickets are on sale now.
Bingo Loco has taken the world by storm with sold out shows in 200 locations around the globe. Forget the traditional game of bingo - expect a three-hour interactive stage show packed with dance offs, rave rounds, loud and lively music, and some fabulous prizes. The organisers say Bingo Loco is not an event - it’s a show with the mentality of a theatre performance and the energy of a festival. It takes place at Grasslot Sports Club and promises to be a lively night.
If the thought of fresh seafood and a glass of something chilled is more your style, tuck in to paella, salads, Cumberland sausage and some stunning desserts with a view of the sea at the first Fish and Fizz Supper. It’s being held at The Settlement, in its enviable position perched high above the Harbourside.
Now in its fourth year, the Taste of the Sea festival takes place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August in Maryport. There will be plenty of stalls to browse, loads of culinary experts to talk to, hot food and cold drinks, a children’s fairground and more.
As well as the ever-popular music stage, and the rum bar and beer marquee, there will be hot and cold seafood traders, an oyster bar and fish to buy straight from the Chelaris boat. Entertainment will include sea shanty bands and roaming street theatre, as well as a children’s Treasure Trail to take visitors all around the town.
The Taste Cumbria events are organised by Cumberland Council.

Our food safety team is aware of two local premises being contacted by a scammer pretending to be from the council and ordering the business to close. Contact has been made over the phone. To reassure business owners and prevent others being scammed, we made it clear in our comms that would never do this sort of action over the phone and we would rather visit in person. We also always show ID when visiting in person - so we encouraged them to ask to check if this isn't presented.
If you have any information on who it might be behind these calls, if you’ve heard from other outlets getting similar calls, or you have some related queries, please contact environmental.health@cumberland.gov.uk
