Work on the A595
Highways image (small)
We have begun road improvements on the A595 New Mill to Gosforth Crossroads.
The works, carried out by the council's surfacing partner DSD Construction Limited, started on Tuesday 28 May and will go on until Friday 28 June. Two-way traffic lights will be in operation for the first week of the scheme and during each day for full period.
From *Monday 3 June to Friday 28 June*, the works will be carried out under a road closure each night between *7pm and 5am Monday to Saturday*. We aim to minimise disruption to the local community during this period.
Cumberland Council acknowledges that this project may cause some inconvenience to road users, especially since the A595 is a major road. However, the council is working with local stakeholders, including Parish Councils and local members, to mitigate the disruption as much as possible.
During the night-time road closure from *Monday 3 June to Friday 28 June*, between 7pm and 10pm, vehicles will be able to travel through the site with escort assistance, though delays of up to 30 minutes may occur.
From 10pm to 5am, the entire site will need to be closed with no public access.
Access for emergency vehicles, under blue lights, will be maintained.
Cumberland Council wishes to thank the community for their continued support and patience while they improve the road network and apologise for any inconvenience.
For more information, please contact Cumberland Council’s Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736 or visit the Cumberland Council website. [

Shortlist for SMR production sites
Holtec Britain has announced a shortlist of four sites that have made it through to the final stage of its competition to find a new factory and production site to build a fleet of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which will be used in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. The inclusion of Kingmoor Park in Carlisle was warmly welcomed by Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (Cumbria LEP) and Cumberland Council, which jointly developed the Expression of Interest.
The chosen location will benefit from an initial investment of £1.3billion, reflecting Holtec’s budget for construction. The development and operation of the 20 hectare site is anticipated to directly generate thousands of jobs over the next 15 years. SMRs are viewed as being essential to help the UK meet its net zero and energy security ambitions with a government target of 24GigaWatts of nuclear capacity by 2050.
