Result of the election for the Cumberland Council seat of Harraby North
There was an election for the Cumberland Council ward of Harraby North in Carlisle held on 27 June 2024. The result of the election was as follows:

Therefore Justin Robert McDermott was been duly elected as Councillor for the Harraby North ward.

Advice for voters on photo ID
We’ve been reminding voters to prepare ahead of the UK Parliamentary General Election taking place on Thursday 4 July.
For the first time, voters will need to show photographic ID to vote in a UK Parliamentary General Election. Residents are being advised to make sure they are ready to vote by checking they have an accepted form of ID.
Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a UK, EEA or Commonwealth drivers’ licence; and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass or an Oyster 60+ card. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

Don't forget to post any postal votes and allow enough time for it to get to us, to make sure your vote counts.
If you are a postal voter, do check the instructions which comes with the ballot paper to make sure you complete it correctly.
New rules for postal votes
The rules for postal votes have also now changed. This means that anyone returning a postal vote by hand must complete a postal vote return form. A postal vote returned by hand not accompanied by a postal vote return form will be rejected.
Therefore, the easiest way to return a postal vote is to use the Royal Mail envelope provided with the postal vote pack. Just pop it in a post box in good time to ensure the vote is counted.
Electors who wish to hand their postal vote in at a polling station or one of the designated council offices must now complete a postal vote return form for the postal vote to be accepted.
At polling stations, Presiding Officers and Clerks will have the necessary form to be completed.
Council offices have signage in place to tell electors where they need to go to complete the form when they come to hand the vote in. Postal votes should not be put through the letter boxes or internal mail boxes at council buildings as these will have to be rejected.
There are also new limits on the number of postal votes that can be handed in by one person.

Open-air Theatre events
A bumper programme of open-air theatre events will be held in Carlisle this summer and will get underway in July.
Three performances by The Pantaloons theatre company will be held at Talkin Tarn Country Park, Brampton, CA8 1HN.
All performances start at 7pm.

* Thursday 25 July: Robin Hood by Mark Hayward
* Thursday 29 August: The Merry Wives of Windsor by William Shakespeare
For all events, please bring along seating and a picnic as the events will be held on the hard standing on the waterfront. The tearoom kiosk will be open serving a selection of tasty treats.

Srebrenica National Memorial Day
A reminder that we have organised an event to mark Srebrenica Memorial Day 2024 [
].
A survivor of the Bosnian War will be sharing his experiences at a public event, held at the Civic Centre, Carlisle, on Monday 8 July, starting at 11am.
It will be an opportunity to learn more about the Bosnian War and the genocide at Srebrenica and remember this significant episode in modern history. It will include guest speaker Jasmin Dajic - a survivor of the Bosnian War.
School children and key partners will be invited to attend the event on Monday 8 July, however the event is open to all to attend.
It will be held between 11am (10.45am arrival) and 12.30pm.

The theme for this year’s Srebrenica Memorial Day 2024 [
] event is *‘I Am Because You Are’*. It will underline the importance of standing up against those who try to divide us and standing up for each other against hatred, discrimination, harassment or prejudice. It will also help empower everyone in our communities to understand the importance of interconnectedness to help build a safer, stronger, and more cohesive society for all.

Fabulous Foodie Fun
Taste of the sea
The county’s best food festivals are back, and this year’s Taste Cumbria events are offering even more places to explore.
On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August, it’s time for Maryport’s Taste of the Sea festival, followed by the flagship Taste Cumbria event in Cockermouth on September 28 and 29. Then, on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November, Taste Cumbria is joining forces with Carlisle’s Fireshow and will host a market in the heart of the city.
In December it’s time for festive food at the Taste Cumbria Christmas in Cockermouth on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8, while some of the fabulous traders will be at the Carlisle Christmas Market on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15.
From producers’ stalls and chef demos to exclusive dining experiences and family fun, as well as lively attractions like Bingo Loco and a Taste Cumbria Comedy Night, the weekends promise to give locals and visitors alike plenty to see and do.
New for this year in Maryport is a Fish and Fizz Supper and a crazy Bingo Loco night out, while in Cockermouth there will be a Michelin-starred Supper Club, and a Food on the Fells experience.
The Taste Cumbria festivals take place in the heart of Cumberland’s towns and Carlisle city, giving a boost to the local economy and offering a wealth of different attractions. The festivals are free to attend, include lots of free children’s activities, and also have some additional ticketed events.

Parking update: Central Car Park, Workington
Some additional preparatory investigation works will get underway on the area connected to the proposed Workington Innovation Centre on Monday 1 July.
The exciting development forms part of the Workington Town Deal. It will provide flexible town centre office space for start-up and growing businesses in West Cumbria - high quality co-working space for local workers.
The preparatory works will take place for one day in part of Central Car Park. The affected area will be cordoned off and it will only impact on the annexe part of the car park.
Although the remaining part of the car park will be open, parking is also available at Brow Top or within the Multi Storey car park.
Motorists with a long stay Workington permit can use Brow Top.

A595 improvement works
Works taking place at A595 New Mill to Gosforth due to be completed on 29 June are delayed due to supply issues. They are expected to complete by early next week.
Works taking place at A595 Stubsgill Lane to Holmrook were due to start on Monday 1 July will now be delayed until the A595 New Mill scheme is completed.
Road closure will remain as being 7pm to 5am, with the convoy system operating between 7pm and 10pm.
