Srebrenica National Memorial Day
We have organised an event to mark Srebrenica Memorial Day 2024 [
].
A survivor of the Bosnian War will be sharing his experiences at a public event, held at the Civic Centre, Carlisle, on Monday 8 July, starting at 11am.
It will be an opportunity to learn more about the Bosnian War and the genocide at Srebrenica and remember this significant episode in modern history. It will include guest speaker Jasmin Dajic - a survivor of the Bosnian War.
School children and key partners will be invited to attend the event on Monday 8 July, and the event is open to all to attend.
It will be held between 11am (10.45am arrival) and 12.30pm.
If you are interested in attending the event, please email events@cumberland.gov.uk
The theme for this year’s Srebrenica Memorial Day 2024 [
] event is *‘I Am Because You Are’*. It will underline the importance of standing up against those who try to divide us and standing up for each other against hatred, discrimination, harassment or prejudice. It will also help empower everyone in our communities to understand the importance of interconnectedness to help build a safer, stronger, and more cohesive society for all.

Whitehaven active travel improvements set to get underway
cycling
The first phase of works on a project to improve cycling, walking and wheeling infrastructure in Whitehaven will get underway on Monday (8 July).
Cumberland Council was awarded funding from the Government’s Active Travel Fund to deliver the work on Route 14 of the Whitehaven Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) through the South Whitehaven area.
Route 14 is also part of the National Cycle Network (NCN 72 - Hadrian’s Cycleway and NCN7 - Sea to Sea, also known as the C2C) and consists of both on an off-road cycle provision which links Stanley View to Esk Avenue in Whitehaven.
Proposed improvements include the widening of the shared use cycleway/footway and changes to traffic signs and road markings to promote Active Travel.
The council’s specialist highways engineers will undertake the work which will be done in phases over the summer and autumn months.
The first phase of work will start at Esk Avenue and users of this part of the route will be required to follow the diversion route.
For further enquiries, please contact Cumberland Council’s Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736.
Cumberland Council wishes to thank the community for their continued support and patience while they improve the walking, cycling and wheeling network and apologise for any inconvenience the works may cause.

New facility at Silecroft
Silecroft cafe
Takeaway food is now available from a new coastal facility at Silecroft.
The new facility, designed by Scottish architects Konishi Gaffney, is now complete and Cumberland Council will shortly be going out to the market to appoint a permanent operator to manage the café.
In the meantime, Ravenglass Handmade Ice Cream has started offering a takeaway service from the premises, selling ice-creams, light refreshments and hot and cold drinks.
New externally accessed toilet facilities, which include a changing places room for visitors with additional needs, are also available.
The café’s design maximises views of both the sea and Black Combe Fell through its splayed forms, providing shelter from the wind regardless of direction. The building integrates the pitched slate roof vernacular of the Lake District with adaptations suitable for its beach context. It has a highly Insulated timber frame to ensure energy efficiency, along with integrated Solar PV to provide sustainable power and heating.
The building, which was constructed by Cumbrian firm Roland Hill, hosts bespoke shutters designed by Scottish artist and Turner Prize winner, Martin Boyce. The shutters are formed from a repeated triangular motif, reminiscent of boat sails and are the fourth in the series of creative works to be revealed along the Cumbrian Coast.
