[Harden off seedlings]
Warmer days
Harden off seedlings
Harden-off tender plants and seedlings by gradually getting them acclimatised to the weather conditions outside. To start with ventilate the coldframe by opening the lid slightly on warm still days only, closing it at night. After a few days, gradually increase the amount of ventilation each day until you remove the lid completely. Replace the lid on cold nights for the next week or so, but then remove it permanently.
If you do not have a coldframe, you can harden-off plants successfully in a sheltered spot at the base of a south-facing wall or hedge. To start with bring the plants in at night. After a week, leave them outside on all but the coldest nights, but cover with a double-layer of garden fleece on other nights. If your not sowing your own fast-forward to jumbo seedlings and garden ready sizes that can be planted out in pots (as long as any chance of frst as passed!)

[Plant support]
Support new growth
Plant support
Most climbers will be growing at breakneck speed at this time of the year, and their twining stems can quite quickly form a tangled knot if they’re not given a nudge in the right direction. Therefore, before their lanky stems get too long, gently guide them onto supporting wires or trellis panels, spreading them out evenly so there are no bare patches, and then using soft twine or ties, secure them.

[Slug & snail protection]
Protect new growth
Slug & Snail protection
Slugs and snails are the number one pest here in the UK, and because they’re voracious feeders, they can do masses of damage in no time at all. Keep young plants and soft new growth protected by either creating a physical barrier that they won’t want to cross (ie wool pellets, spikey straw or crushed aggregates), surround plants with a copper band (it’s said to create an unpleasant sensation that sends them packing), or scatter some environmentally friends pellets.

[Planting out dahlias]
Definitive guide to dahlias
Planting out dahlias, advice from Jenny at the Laundry Garden
You may be starting your dahlia tubers off in pots which is a good idea to give them a head start and some early protection from slugs. At this critical stage, when the shoots are just emerging, they are at their tastiest.
If the frosts have passed then you can plant your tubers straight into the ground where you want them to grow. don't forget those occasional late May frosts we get here in the UK!
Prepare your soil, by clearing any weeds and digging in some well rotted manure or compost. This is a good time to add some nitrogen to the soil to feed the leaf growth.
I always use blood, fish & bone or chicken pellets, but your compost or rotted manure will also have some goodness in there. Be careful not to go overboard as too much nitrogen will cause too many leaves instead of flowers. You want slow and steady growth to create strong stems and prolific dahlia flowers.
When planting your dahlias, make sure you give them plenty of space, I would say around 30-50 cm apart. They thrive best in an open, sunny position with at least six hours of sunlight.
