Give your child the best Start for Life

Happy Father’s Day for Sunday to all the dads out there!

We all want to give our children the best start in life. But becoming a parent is a big change and sometimes - for lots of different reasons - our journey as parents can be tricky to navigate.

The good news is there’s lots of help available to all parents and carers, not just dads. From pregnancy until your child is two, the Start for Life service can provide you with trusted information, advice and support on things like:

  • Scans, screening and vaccinations
  • Choosing where to give birth
  • Infant feeding and nutrition
  • Health and development
  • Keeping your little one safe
  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • Physical health and staying active

You can also access support in your local area from one of the 23 Family Hubs dotted around Cornwall. Family Hubs offer things like:

  • Activities for parents and children
  • A meeting space for parents and professionals
  • Parenting courses

You don't have to navigate your parenting journey alone. No matter what you’re facing, there is support help available.

New Family Information Service website launched

Our Family Information Service has launched a new and improved website to make it easier for families to find the help they need.

The new website is designed to act as a single front door to parents, carers and young people looking for childcare, activities and support for children who are disabled or have special educational needs.

The single front door webpage leads to our Together for Families web pages, which provide information about parenting support, school admissions and other useful stuff.

You'll also find details about family-friendly activities in your area, so whether you’re looking for help or just something to do at the weekend, why not check out www.fis.cornwall.gov.uk right now?

Be tick aware

Ticks enjoy warmer weather as much as we do, so watch out for them if you and your pets are spending more time outdoors.

Ticks can live in woodlands, moors and grassy areas, including parks and gardens. You should check for ticks because they can transmit Lyme disease, and in very rare cases, encephalitis.

Here are some simple actions you can take to help protect yourself and others from tick bites:

  • Use tick repellent
  • Wear long sleeves and long trousers to reduce direct skin exposure
  • Keep to clearly defined paths and avoid brushing against vegetation
  • Regularly check for ticks and brush off any you find immediately
  • When you’re back indoors, check for any ticks on you, your children and pets
  • If you find a tick, safely remove it as soon as possible

Need health care over the weekend?

Earlier this week some local NHS services were impacted by IT issues at our hospitals and other NHS locations.

Some areas are still under pressure and we are reminding people to choose where is best so they can access the most appropriate service, including using local pharmacies, NHS 111, minor injury units and the urgent treatment centre. Please check locations, waiting and opening times online as your nearest may not be your quickest.

Thank you for your understanding, support and patience over this time.
