Have a go firefighter taster sessions

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service are looking for new recruits, and they're inviting you to have a go at one of their summer taster sessions.

The service, which will be inviting people to apply for the role of wholetime firefighter in September, is encouraging potential recruits to come along and find out more about the job.

The Have a Go events are open to anyone aged 18 or over. Attendees will try on firefighting gear, take part in activities and go on a tour of the station. They will also learn about the recruitment process and the fitness levels required to join.

Local foster carers tell us how they felt leading up to their first child coming to stay with them.
Children in Cornwall need someone just like you to foster them

Right now here in Cornwall there are 30 children and young people hoping for a foster parent and a place to call home but a serious shortage of foster parents.

These children and young people need someone like you to be brave and take the first step.
Please make the call today and find out how you can become a foster carer. You don't have to be perfect - you just need to care.

Watch our video to hear how people just like you felt when their first foster child came to stay with them. They’ll tell you it's natural to be nervous, but that we’ll give you the  support you need to welcome a child into your home.

If you're thinking about offering a child a home, give us a ring for an informal chat on 0300 456 0120. Or fill in our online form to request a call back.

Encouraging a lifetime love of reading

We're giving library cards to little ones across Cornwall to help encourage a lifetime love of reading.

When new parents register the birth of their baby, we’ll give their child their very own My First Library Card and encourage mum or dad to use it to sign up to their local library.

Cornwall’s libraries have lots of good books for a baby’s first year and beyond. There are high contrast monochrome books that are great for a newborn’s developing vision, textured, sensory and interactive books for busy babies, and picture books and nursery rhymes to entertain, engage and soothe babies and toddlers

Getting children engaged with books and reading from an early age has so many benefits. Books help with brain development, build imagination and help develop language skills.

A heat health alert has been issued

A yellow heat health alert has been issued for the South West from 9am on Sunday 11 August to 9am on Tuesday 13 August

Please look out for people who might struggle to keep cool, especially older people, children, babies, and those with underlying health conditions. If you can, please ask if your friends, family or neighbours need any support.

Here are some top tips for staying safe this summer:

  • Try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm when the UV rays are strongest
  • If you have to go outside in the heat, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen (SPF 30-50) and wear a wide-brimmed hat
  • Close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors
  • Drink plenty of fluids, avoid excess alcohol, take water with you if you're travelling
  • Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children, vulnerable adults, or animals
  • Avoid physical exertion during the hottest parts of the day
  • If you are planning to go swimming in open water to cool-down, take care and follow local safety advice.

The British Medical Association has announced that GPs will take collective action.

This means that GPs may choose to make changes to some aspects of how they work. The NHS is asking you to come forward as usual for care during collective action. Practices will still be open and will still see patients.

What does this mean for you?

If you have an appointment with your GP practice, you should attend as usual, unless you're told otherwise.

Practices will still be open and see patients and you can book appointments through your GP practice. However, some GPs may direct patients to other local services.

There's more information on NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly’s website.

We’ve won £650,000 from the Department of Health and Social Care to help people access social care services to increase their independence.

We’re putting the money into:

  • The Shared Lives scheme so we can match more people who need care and support with an approved carer
  • The Carefree app, which works with hotels and Airbnbs to gives carers free short breaks for a small admin fee
  • Training for carers who support people living with dementia
  • Using more technology-enabled care like sensors that track how often people move around, eat and drink
  • A tool for social care workers that will help the people they support be more involved in the planning of their own care.
