Cheshire East Council
North West Crewe Package
banner being cut
Welcome to the 14th and final edition of the North West Crewe Package newsletter
We are delighted to let you know that the North West Crewe Package scheme is now open!
The North West Crewe Package (NWCP) is a large-scale highways infrastructure project, which has improved roads and junctions and brings forward opportunities for housing developments and local businesses to expand.
It was officially opened by Councillor Mark Goldsmith, chair of Cheshire East Council's highways and transport committee on Wednesday 10 July.
It's been a project two years in the building and through partnership working and collaborating with many different organisations along the way, we have delivered this fantastic project.
The scheme was delivered on our behalf by Balfour Beatty.
Leighton Academy schoolchildren and staff
Pupils from Leighton Academy bury time capsule to mark opening
We were delighted to welcome staff and students from Leighton Academy to our opening event last week. As they are the school closest to where the works have been happening, we have been very happy to have them on board.
Principal Samantha Thompson and schoolteacher Joanne Leigh came along to our site along with four very excited year 6 schoolchildren and buried a time capsule on the roundabout just behind where the official banner was cut.
One of the children was so handy on the shovel that we did think about offering him an apprenticeship. "Can I stay here and do this instead of maths this afternoon, please miss" he said, which brought a chuckle from everyone attending!
Fact file
How we did it...
72,250 tonnes of stone were imported
48,155m3 of clay material was reused
15,995m3 of soil material was reused
42,867m3 of waste was removed
3.85 miles of pipes were installed - that's wider than the width of parts of the Amazon river in high season!
9.25 miles of kerbs were laid - the equivalent of the width of 18 Niagara Falls!
19,472 tonnes surfacing materials were laid
902 tonnes of concrete was brought to site
99.9% of waste avoided landfill
1,750 trees were planted
5,800 shrubs were planted
40,000m2 of wildflower seeds were sown
lasting legacy
Creating a lasting legacy
*Along the journey we got to meet and work with 1,183 students and many other community groups such as the health and wellbeing charity, Wishing Well shown above!*
Over the course of the two years our project ran, we met up with 14 schools including:
* Brine Leas Academy
* Crewe Engineering and Design University Technical College
* Sandbach High School
* Shavington Academy
* Church Lawton School
and of course...
Leighton Academy!
*Some of the key positive outcomes which came out of that engagement were:*
* 12 career fairs/mock interview sessions were held
* 8 weeks' work experience was provided
* 1 T-level student was employed following a work placement
* 7 apprentices were employed
* 2 graduates were employed
* 18 permanent jobs were created
And how does it look now?

NWCP schematic complete
And finally..
The section of road linking the A530 and Tottys Hall Way was slightly delayed from opening, due to the recent wet weather, which just held up the completion of the finishing landscape works.
It is anticipated that this section of the new road will be opened to traffic by the end of July.
For updates on this and an overview of the project, you can also read further information on our website at: cheshireeast.gov.uk/home/NWCP [
]
But otherwise this truly is the end of the road. There will still be some works going on
but these are being led by Leighton Hospital and are part of their ambitious redevelopment plans, which naturally we wish them all the very best with.
Following the works which the hospital is leading on, there will be further works to bring forward the residential housing. These will be led developer led.
Thank you for following us on our journey!
