*Council elects new leader*
Cllr Nick Mannion
Councillor Nick Mannion was elected as the new leader of the council as Councillor Sam Corcoran stood down as leader at a meeting of full council yesterday.
Councillor Mannion said: “Firstly, I must place on record my deepest thanks and appreciation to Sam Corcoran. I have served with him in cabinet and then as a committee chair since May 2019.
“During this time, Sam’s determination and commitment to the duties of leader of the council has been unstinting. From leading the council through the Covid pandemic, to our response to the current financial challenge, he has led us through some of the greatest challenges in the council’s history – as well as many significant achievements.
“Looking to the future, I want to continue and accelerate the work to place the council on a more-sustainable financial footing and guide the council’s transformation programme to its completion. I cannot do that alone, nor can one political group.
“We must work together across the council, supporting officers to deliver for Cheshire East – we owe it to the residents and businesses in our borough.”

Major highways improvement programme to run through summer
roadworks
We are delivering an intensive programme of highway improvement works at a number of locations across the borough over the summer.
The £1.44m large-scale works will include the A500 Shavington Bypass which covers nine miles, the longest stretch of road in the borough to ever receive surface dressing treatment.
The programme of surface dressing is designed to both increase skid resistance and seal the road surface, preventing water getting in – the major cause of potholes. This work is being funded jointly by the council’s capital investment programme for highway maintenance 2024/25 and central government grants.
The surface dressing work started last week and will continue until 23 August.
Find out more, including the locations where the works are due to take place, on the link below.

Tips for a safe and healthy summer
Young boy eating ice cream
With temperatures forecast to rise and many enjoying summer getaways, we are reminding residents to prioritise health and safety during warmer weather.
Measures you can can take to stay safe:
* *Sun safety* - wear long sleeves, hats, and sunglasses throughout the day, especially during peak sun hours (11am to 3pm). Don't forget sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, reapplied regularly.
* *Hydration is key* - keep yourself and loved ones hydrated by sipping water and cool beverages throughout the day. Avoid excessive alcohol, as it dehydrates.
* *Beware of bites* - apply insect repellent to minimise the risk of bites and stings. Be alert for ticks in grassy areas and conduct regular body checks. If bitten or stung, clean the area and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Painkillers like ibuprofen can also help.
* *Barbecues* - thaw frozen meat completely before cooking. Partially cook food in the oven before finishing it on the grill. Ensure all cooked items are piping hot before serving. Avoid using utensils that touched raw meat on cooked food. Don't consume hot food left out in the sun for extended periods.
* *Water safety* - always exercise caution before entering open water bodies and try and stay within your depth. Non-swimmers should avoid venturing in. Be aware of potentially cold-water temperatures that can cause cold shock. Pay attention to undercurrents, especially in seemingly calm water.

Re-purposing of children's centres
We are looking to re-purpose up to seven of our remaining children's centre buildings and further develop our family hub outreach offer. This proposal will help achieve our savings target while offering a service that improves the reach and support to the most disadvantaged communities and removes the barriers some families face in accessing the current children's centres.
