At a meeting of full council earlier this week, the council's budget for 2024/25 was agreed, which will protect vital services including support for growing social care needs.
The council will grow and invest in areas where there are increased costs and complexity of demand, as well as give commitment to support those who need the most help. The budget also outlines £30m in savings across council services to ensure financial sustainability.

New deputy leader, mayor and deputy mayor elect
During the meeting of full council, members elected Councillor Michael Gorman as deputy leader of the Council. Councillor Gorman represents Wilmslow West and Chorley and has recently been elected as leader of the independent group. He has most recently also served as vice-chair of finance sub committee.
Council also nominated Councillor Marilyn Houston as Mayor of Cheshire East and Councillor David Edwardes as Deputy Mayor for the civic year 2024/25. They will be formally elected at the Annual General Meeting of Council in May.

Exceptional financial support
Cheshire East Council is one of 19 councils to be granted exceptional financial support from the government.
Like councils across the country, we have been experiencing unprecedented financial pressures. This results, in part, from increased demand and costs for special educational needs which have not been met by increased high-needs funding.
There is also continued financial uncertainty following the government’s announcement, in October, of the cancellation of HS2 north of Birmingham and spending already incurred by the council in preparation for HS2 phase 2.
We have been in discussion with government for a number of months about these particular issues.
