Chelmsford to commemorate D-Day 80 next week
On *Thursday 6 June* Chelmsford will join authorities and communities across the UK in marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in 1944 – the largest naval, air and land operation in history.
Special events, including several beacon lighting ceremonies, will be taking place across Chelmsford next week to pay tribute to the thousands of brave troops who heroically stormed the beaches of Normandy. VOLFEST returns to Chelmsford High Street
Next week, Chelmsford CVS will be marking National Volunteers Week by taking over Chelmsford High Street on *Thursday 6 June 9.30am–4pm* for VOLFEST 2024. Expect feel-good activities, music and fun as *50 local charities* come together to promote their services and showcase how volunteering can change someone’s life.

Essex Book Festival launches tomorrow
This year’s Essex Book Festival officially launches at the University of Essex *tomorrow (1 June).* There’s still time to book tickets for plenty of events coming to Chelmsford, including Rebecca Smith’s Rural at Chelmsford Cathedral on *13 June,* and the special Restless Brilliance Day of nature-focused events coming to Hylands House on *16 June.*

Volunteer for the community river clean next weekend
A community event to clean up Chelmsford’s rivers is taking place in the city centre on* **Saturday 8 June* at *9am**.* The event, which starts at the Meadows Surface car park, aims to reduce litter pollution in the Rivers Can and Chelmer. Pickers, bags and PPE will be available for up to 200 willing volunteers!

Postal vote deadline for the general election
If you are going to be away, or can’t get to your polling station on* 4 July 2024,* you can apply to vote by post. You must send your applications to us *before 5pm on* *Wednesday 19 June**.* It’s easiest to apply online, but you can also download and fill in an application form or ask for one to be posted to you.

You’ll need photo ID to vote in the general election on* 4 July. *If you don't have accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free voter ID document, known as a Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate is *5pm on Wednesday 26 June. *

Local takeaway operator fined and disqualified
A Chelmsford businesswoman has been found guilty of multiple food hygiene and housing legislation contraventions. At Chelmsford Magistrates' Court, a District Judge ordered Ms Kai Wen Cheong and her business to pay fines and costs of over* £11**,000* and disqualified her from acting as a company director for the next* three years.*
