We’re back! After a break in May to welcome the National Flower Show, our Open Estate Days have now returned to every third Sunday of the month for the rest of the year.
Here is what’s coming up on Sunday 16 June from 10am to 3pm.
Activities
This month, we are joined by Essex Book Festival, who have collaborated with Chelmsford Museum on their exhibition Restless Brilliance: The story of J.A. Baker and The Peregrine [
] to bring their own ‘Restless Brilliance’ day to Hylands.
Inspired by the nature writing and birdwatching diaries written by Chelmsford author J.A. Baker in the 1960’s, you can book in to hear from modern nature writers Mark Cocker, Joanna Glen, and Andrew Millham. Talks will be held in the Banqueting Room, and you can buy the books and get them signed in the Small Dining Room. Book your tickets at the Essex Book Festival website. [

Essex Book Festival
Families can join us in Terrace Room to make their own bird-related arts and crafts – a bird bookmark! These are perfect for book lovers big and small. Make one for yourself and maybe one for a loved one on Father’s Day.
In addition, we will have a volunteer on hand to take you on a guided tour of the ground floor of Hylands House. You can now enjoy these at 10am and 1pm.
Lawn games in the back of the house and a storyteller in the Drawing Room.
Join us in the Drawing Room for storytelling by Mike Dodsworth at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm and 2pm.
This month’s exhibition in the Library will be all about ‘The Hanbury Years’, and the Friends of Hylands House will have more information about their membership in the Saloon.
Our Back Lawn will have a range of games on offer to play at your leisure, and if the weather behaves, bring a picnic blanket along to relax and enjoy the market food in the beautiful surroundings.

Urban Food Fest are back, bringing together a fantastic selection of outdoor traders and vendors again for the street food and craft market outside of Hylands House.
Already confirmed for June: Rise and Roll, Bakeaway, Chelmsford Brew Co, The Mobile Pizza Co, Bud Florist, Grills on Wheelz, and Woof and Friends.
Enjoy the Hot Box DJ set outside in the market whilst you’re here.
The Stables
Our resident artists throw open their studio doors and welcome you to see into their working spaces – explore upstairs as well as downstairs!
Hot Box Live provide the tunes in The Stables courtyard. Join them for live music from 11am.
Find unique items #MadeAtHylands in the Artist's Shop and discover hidden gems in the Friends of Hylands House second hand bookshop.

Visit The Stables Information Point and pick up your handset to explore the Pleasure Gardens in a brand-new way! Our Hylands History & Gardens guided tour [
] will be available for you to hire or scan the QR code and listen along with our new tour about the Estate and how it came to be.
Keep an eye out for Hawthorn Heavy Horse carriage rides that start from the front of the House! Pay on the day and take a trip around the Estate with a difference.
Our popular new café The Deli will be open at the Stables all day! Open daily from 8am to 4pm.
