March round-up
It has been a busy March for the Active Charnwood Team and some much-needed holidays have been taken over Easter!
Highlights this month include building connections with wider health and wellbeing organisations at the Charnwood Community Health and Wellbeing Partnership Celebration, and Sam went into Loughborough College to provide some inclusive physical activity training for students as part of their CIMPSA employability programme.
We continued to learn and develop our knowledge as Nancy become a This Mum Moves Ambassador after taking a crash course in all things physical activity pre and postnatally. We have lots of exciting projects in the pipeline so watch this space!
Easter Holiday Activities
We had a brilliant time during our holiday activities this Easter. These included two Archery sessions at Beaumanor Hall and two climbing sessions at Loughborough Climbing station. The children had a brilliant time at the Archery and many bullseyes and ballons were hit! High heights were reached at the climbing station, and we look forward to offering more sessions during the summer holidays.
Charnwood Community Health and Wellbeing Partnership Celebration
Active Charnwood joined a range of service providers at the Charnwood Community Health and Wellbeing Partnership Celebration in March. Alongside our Neighbourhood Development Officers, we met some fantastic people who are doing truly impactful work to improve the health and wellbeing of residents in Charnwood. It was brilliant to see so many individuals working towards a common goal.
Outreach event
In partnership with our Neighbourhood Development Officer Nadja, the team attended an outreach day at The Polish Centre in Loughborough to give a talk to local Ukrainian residents about the physical activity opportunities in the local area. This was a valuable chance to share information and local knowledge and understand the needs of our local communities.
CIMSPA Employability Programme
Sam visited Loughborough College to deliver “Golden Games” training for the CIMSPA employability programme. Learners were shown how to engage wider members of the community by adapting physical activity methods to be inclusive and age appropriate. Sam said: 'It was great to work with the students at Loughborough College and we look forward to helping them enhance their coaching abilities by transitioning them into community settings. It is rewarding to know that the physical activity coaches of the future will have the knowledge to deliver effective inclusive sessions."

Countryside Walks
The next three months of countryside walks have now been released and bookings are open! Join us for free walks in the countryside this spring and summer. See the local scenery, meet new people, and soak in the benefits of physical activity in nature.
More information about each walk can be found on our webpage here and bookings can be made here.
National Forest Walk - Coach Trip
May is National Walking Month, and to celebrate walking we are offering The National Forest Walk. This is a full day of walking in which we will travel via coach to Packington, walk through Ashby-de-la-Zouch to Blackfordby where we will stop for a lovely pub lunch. Then we will make our way on to Measham via Conkers and Moira Furnance. Walking along footpaths, field edges, canals town paths and old railway lines, this 12-mile walk will pass many sites of historic and industrial interest.
Click here to see our full timetable of countryside walks here. Bookings can be made for The National Forest Walk here.
Steady Steps Starting (just 6 spaces remaining)
Steady Steps courses start this April! Steady Steps Falls Prevention is a 24- week programme tailored to those who have previously fallen or worry about falling and is designed to help improve balance and stability.
Sam and Bryony worked hard in March organising information packs for more than 50 attendees. Sessions at John Storer House and Mountsorrel are now fully booked but we have 3 places remaining on our Loughborough Leisure Centre course, and our course in Shepshed.
Please reach out to us as soon as possible if you would like to be considered for the last few places.
Our next set of courses will begin in October. Please email us at active.charnwood@charnwood.gov.uk to express your interest!
Mindfulness with Loughborough Wellbeing Centre
As well as being National Walking Month, May 13th – 19th is Mental Health Awareness Week. The Active Charnwood team will be supporting a range of physical activity opportunities during this week in partnership with wider organisations. Keep an eye on our social media for more details! In the meantime, consider prioritising your mental health with the fantastic sessions that are currently being held at Loughborough Wellbeing Centre.
For many people, it can be difficult to focus while our body remains still. But practicing mindfulness does not have to be a still, solitary, indoor activity. This is why Loughborough Wellbeing Centre are now offering their new 'Mindful Walk'. Research has shown mindful walking in nature offers stress-busting and mood-boosting advantages.
Join Gareth, an experienced mindfulness coach, for a slow-paced, short walk which will include lots of pauses to notice and appreciate your surroundings. Learn to be more aware of yourself, your thoughts, and your presence and take time for yourself to heal from the stress of day-to-day life. There is no need to book! Just turn up on the day and make yourself known at Loughborough Wellbeing Centre’s reception.
Couch to 5K
Join the running revolution this summer! Active Charnwood’s Couch to 5k programme is back due to popular demand. This is a ten-week running programme led by an experienced running coach. These sessions are suitable for those who have never ran before, are looking to return to running, or just want to improve their running abilities and general fitness.
