Maths, English and ESOL courses

If you're interested in developing your maths and English skills, take a look at the courses starting soon. 


These courses and qualifications are free for adults aged 19 years and older in Central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough, subject to meeting criteria.

Maths qualifications

Achieve your accredited maths qualification


Maths Functional Skills qualification

We use maths and numeracy skills in everyday life. It supports us to understand numbers in the world around us. 

A Functional Skills maths qualification looks at the practical application of maths in everyday life – at work and at home.


This course takes place in a classroom in Leighton Buzzard Library. The induction starts on Friday 21 June 2024 from 9:30am to 11:30am.

English Functional Skills qualification

A Functional Skills English course will support you to learn, consolidate and apply key English skills in real work and life situations, essential for employment and educational opportunities.

Online classroom option

Independent study option

The next two courses available are:

  • Online classroom on Microsoft Teams. The induction starts on Monday 17 June 2024 from 6pm to 8pm.

  • Independent study completed online. The induction starts on Friday 28 June 2024 from 1pm to 3pm.

English courses

Build confidence with your speaking skills


Confident Speaking course

If you feel a bit uneasy speaking in front of an audience or in one-to-one situations, this course is designed to assist you in developing valuable language skills.

It will equip you with the tools you need to speak in both professional and personal settings.


Learn in a virtual classroom on Microsoft Teams. This course starts on Friday 28 June 2024 from 9:30am to 11:30am.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses

Learn English if it's not your first language

ESOL summer school

Spend the summer practising your English speaking skills! This intensive communication course will focus on verbal and written skills which are useful in both daily life and work settings.


This course starts on Friday 2 August 2024. Lessons will run every day from Monday to Friday in August, from 9:30am to 11:30am.

ESOL workshops

If you want to enrol onto one of BESA's ESOL courses, come along to this workshop! You will be supported to complete an initial assessment of your current English level, and take part in some taster activities to give you an idea of what the courses will cover. 

July workshop in Houghton Regis

September workshop in Bedford

The next three workshops available are:

  • Thursday 25 July 2024 in Houghton Regis, from 9:30am to 3pm.

  • Tuesday 3 September 2024 in Bedford, from 9:30am to 3pm.

  • Thursday 5 September 2024 in Houghton Regis, from 9:30am to 3pm.

You must register your interest before attending a workshop. You can then enrol onto a course.
