Free courses are starting in Houghton Regis from May 2024

Money skills courses for adults

Understanding finances can be tricky, but feeling confident with money is important for our wellbeing. These funded courses will give you the skills to better take control of your finances.

These courses are free for adults aged 19 years and older in Central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough.

If you attend all four courses, you will receive a £30 supermarket voucher to support your learning journey. Vouchers are available subject to meeting funding criteria.

These courses are being held at Bedfordshire Employment and Skills Academy, Parkside Drive, Houghton Regis, LU5 5PY.

Cost of Living Support course

Thursday 2 May 2024, from 10am to midday

This workshop will help you improve your understanding of the current cost of living rates and develop your confidence with calculating your bills. 

The main objectives are to:

• recognise how choices we make about money can impact our mental health 

• know where to find financial information, benefit support and advice

Budgeting and Saving course

Thursday 9 May 2024, from 10am to midday

This workshop explores creating a budget for current and future spending, and looking at different ways to save money. You will learn to:

• plan and manage a budget based on need and priorities

• learn ways to plan and keep track of incoming and outgoing money

Borrowing and Debt course

Thursday 16 May 2024, from 10am to midday

Boost your confidence with understanding the different aspects of borrowing money and repaying loans. This 2 hour workshop will support you to: 

• recognise the concept of saving and borrowing money 

• learn about interest rates and APR, and how they affect repayments

Making the Most of your Money course

Thursday 23 May 2024, from 10am to midday

Come along to improve your skills around saving money on bills and learn how to make your money go further. This workshop covers:

• comparing products and bills, like mobile phone contracts 

• learning your consumer rights when you buy an item

• knowing the questions to ask before you buy to save money
