English and ESOL courses

These courses and qualifications are free for residents aged 19 in Central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough, subject to meeting criteria.

Develop your English skills for work and life

Good English skills help us communicate at work and at home. All of our courses look at the practical application of English in everyday life.

Accredited English qualifications


A Functional Skills qualification evidences your ability to apply practical English skills to real-life situations. A level 2 qualification is widely considered equal to GCSE grade 4 or C, and can help you access higher level courses and training.

New ESOL summer school


If English isn’t your first language, this ESOL summer school can help you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. ESOL will help you build confidence with the English language in everyday life, education and employment.

NEW! ESOL Summer School in August

Do you want to spend the summer improving your English skills?

This intensive communication course will focus on verbal and written skills which are useful in both daily life and work settings. This course is non-accredited.

Lessons will run every day from Monday to Friday in August, from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

The course is running in a classroom at Bedfordshire Employment and Skills Academy, Houghton Regis, LU5 5PY. Click here for Google Maps directions.


You must register your interest to attend this course. Please complete a short enquiry formand select 'ESOL', or call us on 0300 300 8131. The phone line is monitored during standard office hours.

English Functional Skills qualifications

A Functional Skills course will support you to learn the the essential foundational skills in English for employment and educational opportunities, whilst working towards an accredited City & Guilds Level 1 or Level 2 qualification.


Functional Skills courses take around 6 months to complete. This is based on 2 hours of learning plus around 1 hour of homework per week. 


Next courses starting in June

Virtual classroom

Two courses start on Monday 17 June 2024, either on Monday mornings from 9:30am to 11:30am or Monday evenings from 6pm to 8pm.


These courses are led by a tutor in a virtual classroom on Microsoft Teams.

Independent study

This course starts on Friday 28 June 2024, from 1pm to 3pm.


This course is completed through independent study on an online platform, with tutor support remotely via email.
